Re: DC Collectibles doing Batman The Animated Series figures!!!!!

I don't know. Those don't look bad to me but they sort of have a weird quality to them. Plus honestly we'd get way less characters, at least we know with DC Collectibles that it's likely we'll probably get a few different waves with a variety of characters. Now if by some chance they made a few characters from the show (especially some of the main ones like Batman, Robin, and The Joker) I'd probably get them.

Re: DC Collectibles doing Batman The Animated Series figures!!!!!

I don't think it could work because each character they would do would need a specific true type to match their body type. Batman's body type was unique, Robin's body type was unique. Catwoman, Joker, Two-Face, etc. they were all highly idealized. There's not a single true type out there on the market that has Batman's lean legs or that barrel chested torso. The head and forearms? Forget it. Look at their costumed figures for realistic comic heroes like the Reeve Superman, Star Spangled Cap, 60s Bats and Robin. They just get away with those outfits in 1/6 form with the noticeable stitching and somewhat ill fitting, baggy clothing (depending on which figure). Figures for sharp, streamlined characters though? I don't think they'd mesh well at all. Look at the Burt Ward Robin's knees or that Captain America in general. The clothing is somewhat unsightly. Now picture that on the HUGE buck an Animated Batman would have to have. That's not even thinking about things like capes (something Hot Toys doesn't do too well), the cloth material, etc.

The more you move away from that solid character model and statuesque Maquette look, the worse they'll be. These designs lend themselves more towards statues then they do fully pose able dolls. I think these DCD figures are as far as anyone could possibly get with fully poseable action figures. They're walking a fine line between style and function. Just look at that Batman, half of his joints are rendered useless since it has to conform to that style, specifically the shoulders and the cape.

I love the larger scale, but I'm not so sure it's really THAT much of an upgrade from what we got from Kenner/Hasbro all those years ago.

The Timm designs are just so smooth with an economy of lines....the added articulation, particularly in the crotch, really takes away from that.

It's damn cool looking and I love that they are bigger and the first true action figures from the property meant for adults and not cheap kids' playthings, but it's a shame there really is no way to preserve the simplicity of the artwork and have meaningful articulation.

Guess it's the age old dilemma....statues vs toys?

You sure brah?

:lol

I love my old lil' figures, I still have a few, but it's definitely a huge upgrade.

The articulation doesn't bother me, it doesn't have ugly gaps or anything, oh and also, Toys > Statues, at least for me :lol

The quality of the figures since DC Direct became DC Collectibles has been pretty impressive too, and now they are adding more articulation on a consistent basis as well as introducing deluxe figures. I'm excited to see where DCC is a year from now.
Indeed, DC Collectibles is amongst the best you can get on that scale, the Arkham figures are so good because the design allowed them to hide the articulation, Timm's designs are cleaner so they can't hide the joints, it doesn't bother me in the slightest though, looks great.

Yeah true. Although I always liked them when they were DC Direct too. I think I actually have more of their figures from before they changed names. Their new figures do seem to be adding a bit more articulation though which is nice. One thing I always have liked about their figures is that they make a decent action figure at a relatively low cost and put a lot of detail in. I know a lot of people liked the DC Universe Classics line more because of the articulation and whatnot but I always thought their figures looked more like kids toys rather than adult collectibles and I never liked that they had a bunch of really visible joints to give them the better articulation.

Re: DC Collectibles doing Batman The Animated Series figures!!!!!

aw man thats awesome... now if they would just release the animated series on blu ray.

Re: DC Collectibles doing Batman The Animated Series figures!!!!!

It looks beautiful, like a small work of art. As much as I like this figure, I can't wait to see TAS version with the yellow emblem.

Well they would require new bodies, and there would be some tradeoffs with joints a la Ward's knees (though I think that can be mitigated with material--Tony Meis's stuff does a pretty good job with this), but on balance I think they could be great. There is actually a 1/6 scale custom Animated Batman project going, and from that we should be able to get an idea. I do agree that the only way to get pitch perfect representations is the statue route, though. But of course, many of us like to pose our dollies, and are willing to make a sacrifice in design for that purpose.

I hope Poison Ivy comes with that wrist crossbow.. that would be epic!

That would be cool and I hope SOME of the figures come with accessories, but I think we'll get TNA Poison Ivy first. It seems Bruce Timm REALLY loves the look of the new adventures ....although I don't think he has anything to do with this line of figures or DCC.

Nah, that's straight up bull right there. :lol

That's not a fair comparison at all, that figure is blown up on our monitors and is about 500% bigger than what it actually is. The paint apps aren't like that in person and are quite clean. Hell, that figure even looks used. Bet if we took the sample that is at Toy Fair right now, took a close up picture like that, it wouldn't hold up to scrutiny.

Try something a little more like this,

BATMANCOMPARE.jpg

Those 1997 TNBA revamp figures from Kenner were DEAD ON to the maquette models. Detective Batman, Robin, Nightwing, Joker, Two-Face, Rumble Ready Riddler, Mission Masters Freeze. The sculpts were fantastic. I could see if you were comparing Catwoman or something,

(she was horrible back in 93' too)

But a lot of those figures were/are great. If DCD make a Classic BTAS Batman, I don't care how superior it is, the original 1992/1993 Combat Belt Batman is one of the best Batman figures of all time. The sculpt, the accessories, the card, it's pure gold.

combatbeltbatman.jpg

That ain't nostalgia talking either. They literally don't make the equivalent figures like that any more. Current Hasbro and Mattel's figures close to that scale now are junk and they don't have anywhere near the number of playsets, vehicles or character selection that Kenner had.

I agree with that one. I'm very skeptical that any mass produced figure by DC Direct will look as nice as that figure did in-hand.

You really think those weren't mass produced? Don't get me wrong I love the Kenner line too but I don't see why some people in here are skeptical on this line.

Re: DC Collectibles doing Batman The Animated Series figures!!!!!

Kenner Batman was the ****, back in the day. I still have my Batcave around here somewhere.

They were really good for their time I agree and a lot better than the toys kids get now days. I still am excited for the DC Collectibles line though and think that these figures will be a cool update. I have quite a few of their figures and they normally do a pretty good job and honestly they're what got me interested in collecting figures again to begin with.

Re: DC Collectibles doing Batman The Animated Series figures!!!!!

DC could actually have some pretty kick-*** Con Exclusives with this line, if they took a play out of NECA's handbook. How cool would it be if they did an SDCC version of one of the old Kenner or Hasbro variants for Batman?

Not only were they mass produced, they were overproduced :lol Batman merchandise from the late 80's/ early 90's made by Toybiz or Kenner was overproduced to the point they are easily available today, 20+ years later.

Yeah, I'm not sure where the concerns are coming from for these. Honestly, even when DC Collectibles was DC Direct, the biggest problem that people complained about was lack of articulation. As far as detail work goes, though, you could go back even further and the sculpt and paintwork on some of the stuff like the Alex Ross figures was unparalleled, and their video game stuff, as of late, has been top notch, as well, so, in regards to something like this (where the designs mean less intricate detail work and more clean, crisp QC), I don't see the problem. It's not like we'd have to worry about the pores being over defined.:lol
