Deadpool - Some Good News and Some Bad News

Twitter. An online service speedily becoming one of the great sources for news information. Most recently with Tim Pocock, who stated he would be reprising his role as Cyclops for X-Men: First Class, which was to be filmed in 2010. (This statement was later retracted). The newest tweet to turn our heads comes from Rob Liefeld, creator of Cable, Deadpool, and a founder of Image Comics. He talks about the upcoming Deadpool movie in a series of tweets we’ll
explore here.
The Good News:
Since Deadpool appeared in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (unfortunately) buzz has been building
about this movie. Questions, concerns, and fears, it changes day by day. Deadpool is such a great character I think we were all a little upset to see what happened to the Merc-with-a-mouth in Wolverine. The lack of a costume, optic blasts and those lame Baraka blades (How does he bend his arms with the blades retracted? The length of the blades doesn’t quite work with the physics of the body…anyway, I won’t get started). Liefeld puts some questions to rest.
"Great Deadpool movie meeting! Lauren Schuler Donner and her team are headed in the right direction!"
Good to hear, since Donner has been involved in a lot of great movies. However, this is how it always begins, and then it starts to spiral out of control (X-Men: The Last Stand).
"Deadpool movie checklist- DP in costume-check! Breaking 4th wall-check! Loads of killing-double check!"
AWESOME! This is what we need to hear. ‘Pool’s costume is as much a part of his character as Rorshach’s mask is to his. Even Spider-Man can work without a costume, as he
has run around with only a brown paper bag on his head. Deadpool needs his costume for him to work effectively, that’s just the way it goes. And one of the best aspects of Deadpool is the fact that he knows he is a comic book character, and routinely decides to converse with the audience, breaking the illusive Fourth Wall. After all, he knows…”There is a man…with a typewriter…” and this could translate well to the movie world. And loads of killing is a given, I mean, c’mon. It’s Deadpool. ‘Nuff Said.
"Deadpool movie- YES! Ryan Reynolds is on board!!!"
Meh. Don’t get me wrong, I think Reynolds has the comedic chops to handle the wit of Deadpool, but I’m feeling a little bit of over saturation by Ryan Reynolds in the super hero market. I personally find it a little hard to accept Reynolds as Wade Wilson, Foul Merc
for hire; AND as Hal Jordan, one of the noblest, most humane heroes in the DC Universe. Damn, can he deliver one-liners though.
And finally, Liefeld also offers a little surprise to the possible future of the X-Men movies.
"Also excited to discuss possibilities of Cable in future X-films!!!"
And boom goes the dynamite… For some reason, I love Cable. Not always the character or the storylines, simply the idea of Nathan Summers, son of Scott and Jean raised in an apocalyptic future. Cable rules, there I said it. But I think that to properly introduce Cable into the movie world, that feat alone would take a couple movies. Unless they were to shed all his history, which is very plausible, his story would not properly fit in the current timeline of the X-men movie franchise. So, good luck with that.
Time for the Bad News:
All of this information is coming from Rob Liefeld. The man known for his barrel chested, tiny footed stock characters wielding big physics defying weapons. Yes, he created these characters, but they have all evolved so far past his original creations that having him involved at this point in their movie development may leave us with a character not flush with the one we all know
and love. Liefeld’s Deadpool was nowhere near as witty as say, Joe Kelly or Christopher Priest’s versions. And I once read that Liefeld’s original plan for Cable was to reveal he was actually Ahab, the hunter of mutants. Terrible.
Liefeld bashing aside. I am a fan of Deadpool, and am hopeful that this movie will keep what we love about the character intact. As always, we love to hear what you think about these developments. Do you have a favorite Deadpool moment? What do you think of Cable in the movies? Are you a fan of random sound effects? Bam!Kapow!
