Brief Introduction

The flammenwerfer, while possessing formidable close-quarters combat capabilities, also entails significant risks as it lacks effective special protective measures. The protection of a flammenwerfer lies in preemptive strikes, as missing the target can lead to catastrophic consequences. When faced with a sniper, the flamethrower’s body becomes the only shield for the fuel tanks behind, making retreat with the back exposed not an option—attack becomes the only recourse. Once hit, the flamethrower becomes a torch, endangering nearby soldiers.

DID proudly presents you the WWII German LAH Division Heer Flammenwerfer Gefreiter – Joerg. His headsculpt is lifelike, featuring a scar on his face with tightly closed lips, portraying an intimidating expression coupled with a serious and cautious demeanor, evident at first glance.

He wears the classic WWII German M40 tunic and trousers, topped with a German helmet and a grey toque. A pair of black genuine leather boots are on his feet. Full outfits are meticulously crafted, allowing for a faithful recreation of historical scenes.

Joerg is equipped not only with a sharp-edged metal bayonet and a genuine leather holster but also with a lightweight and highly effective hand grenade. Additionally, he carries an MP40 submachine gun and five bullets. The MP40, compact yet powerful, boasts formidable firepower and exceptional accuracy within its effective range, with unparalleled precision in sustained fire. Furthermore, he wields the flammenwerfer 41, a lightweight yet longer-range weapon with a traditional dual-tank structure, combining potent force with intimidating firepower. The combination of various weapons further accelerates victory in warfare.

He comes with two canvas magazine pouches, a bread bag for storing supplies, and a camouflage zeltbahn versatile for use as a raincoat, camouflage, military tent, and more. An A-frame carrier capable of accommodating various equipment, a strong protective gas mask and gas mask canister,a cigarette for leisure time, and exquisite metal medals are also included. All accessories are exquisitely crafted, making Joerg an essential addition to your German army.

So, he comes with both Heer and Waffen-SS insignia.

Hence the weird title they gave the figure.

Though they show Obergefreiter (SS-Rottenführer) rank, rather than Gefreiter.

This is like Ujindou all over again, which is unlike DID.

He has a Heer belt buckle:

Waffen-SS insignia with Heer belt:

In other news, the sculpt has been identified as "Steamboat Willie" from Saving Private Ryan, played by Joerg Stadler:

Waste of a release with a lot of weirdness in it, I would have been more interested if they made the actual steamboat willie figure.

It's another exercise in getting more use out of current moulds, while adding one new significant item.

If they concentrated on the flammenwerfer as the centrepiece they could have added the protective suit and visor:

He's not going down well on BBICN either.

How is he both Heer and W-SS? Other than the belt buckle faux-pas, I'm only seeing SS insignia...
Also, didn't the W-SS have slightly different tunics than the regular Heer units (not talking about the camo)?

I think they're including Heer insignia as well, but the belt error is akin to Ujindou's recent playbook. It's unlike DID to make an error like that.

The only difference between a Waffen-SS and Heer M40 tunic may just be the insignia itself.

Interesting, I could have sworn I read somewhere (ages ago, when I was collecting WWII stuff, during the heyday of the 6th Division boards) that the W-SS uniforms had a different cut. Will try to look it up, just to satisfy my curiosity.

DID realised their mistake:

D80177’s name will be updated to 1/6 WWII German LAH Division Flammenwerfer Rottenführer- Joerg and the belt will be adjusted as the image in the D80177 mass production. Many thanks to your support and suggestions
🙂

The official description has been changed from:

30 Heer Gefreiter rank insignia X 1

to:

30 Rank insignia X 1

So any thoughts of this one being able to do double duty as either Heer or WSS has been dashed. He's strictly Waffen-SS now.

I like the sculpt and the flammenwerfer, but the remainder isn't very exciting.

The plus is that if he's equipped with the flame thrower it frees up the MP40 and all the gear needed to complete another figure. I have quite a few spare uniforms left over from various sets. It'd give me the opportunity to use the white winter gear from Ujindou's Wiking.

It was Mondo's MacReady with his flame thrower that put Joerg back in my mind.

As I wrote before, on his own Joerg isn't a very exciting figure. It's all about the flammenwerfer 41.

Looking through my spare parts yesterday I could see a more unusual figure ready to be made, but he was lacking belt gear and weapon. It gets expensive buying parts, and it was more economical to just pre-order Joerg and get this...

(DID never updated that photo to show the actual Waffen-SS belt included).

Which I can used on this figure:

IMG_3647.JPG

I'll call him Heinz, Heinz 57 because he's an amalgamation of five companies: Ujindou UD9028 Wiking M43 winter coat and cap; QOrange Jager trousers, gaiters and toque; DID bendy hands and gloves (not my favourite, but bulky is good for the cold); DID Rafe USAAF sculpt; Dragon Models boots and and the Alert Line body they used for their Tom Hardy NKVD.

Watching the part of DID's video where they're slapping the labels onto the flammenwerfer set me searching for photos of of the real thing to see if they were placed in the correct positions.

A lot of original photos are too far away, and even up close it's hard to see if there are any labels at all.

3-flammen41.jpg

There's one at least on the left of the top tank here:

1st-ss-lssah-grenadier-using-a-flammenwerfer-41-moves-from-v0-uh47sbho8apb1.jpg

But no way of telling which label that is.

Top left, top right and bottom left here:

Flammenwerfer 41 sticker placement.jpg

However, there's no left top on either of the next two examples. They're both on the right.

The right side of the top tank from two different examples has the same label in the same place where DID put it:

flammenwerfer 41 1.jpg

Flammenwerfer 41 top sticker.jpg

The lower right one is indistinct:

Flammenwerfer 41 stickers.png

But was clear on a third example:

Flammenwerfer 41 lower right sticker.jpg

DID put that one there as well, so by process of elimination the last label goes on the left of the lower tank as in their video.

So, there's no consistency apart from possibly the one on the lower tank on the left, so might as well just follow DID's lead.
