I get the sense that organizers are struggling with the demand as well. The is the second year of a fast sellout with registration problems thrown into the mix.I don't quite get why the last two years have seen the spike.
I first went in 2008, alone. I don't know how it all happened, buying the pass online was easy and convenient, no sweat. On the day of the even I was dropped off and found myself inside (in awe) without much hassle. I think/assume I cut some line somewhere unknowingly because I basically walked in, got the pass, and the went on my merry way. The experience the year after is when I figured I must have cheated in 2008.
In 2009 the online registration was easy. Actually getting in was completely ridiculous, finding the end of the line to pick up your badge was so long and complicated it was actually funny. We ended up way out on some dock near the water. I think it took 2 hours, no water, no bathrooms, no food, just to get the badge, from there it was a breeze.
2010 was a blast. Easy order on the badges and they allowed them to be picked up off sight the night before. We picked up the badges without an issue, showed up and walked right in, piece of cake and a complete turnaround from the year prior.
2011 I missed due to travel, but those tickets sold out very quickly for the first time.
2012 we all know the story.
Anyway, that's my comic-con history, short as it is. Seems the actual check in/registration experience is different every year. Since you never know when a long line will await you I suggest skipping the morning coffee. if you are on this site I really suggest going at least once. I think I may have lucked into the peak years in 2008-2010 when the spectacle was ramped up to the max just prior to it becoming a complete fiasco (and it was always very hectic inside). But if you love pop culture collectibles it really is amazing. I took my 8 year in 2010 and he was basically speechless the entire time.
