It's perfect timing in the MCU with the A list Avengers winding down.
Plus the new Bryan Singer allegations coming in the current Hollywood climate might finally stick. A fresh start is exactly what X-Men needs.

Not directly, but since Thanos exists in the MCU, then that means the door is open for mutants to emerge.
In the Marvel universe, the Celestials, like Kurt Russell in GOTG would manipulate the DNA of humans, and they created the Deviants, a species that's evil and ugly, the Titans, who are a bunch of Superman and Super women with incredible powers, and finally, the Celestials gave humans the X gene, which would take many years to emerge.
Thanos is a Titan...but he has Deviant mutation, which is why he looks like a Deviant, even though he's a Titan (human looking superman type).
So if Thanos exists and Kurt Russell is a Celstial, then that means Mutants can exist in the MCU, but they haven't emerge yet.

I wouldn't be surprised if neither report is exactly accurate. Companies don't like this stuff getting out until they're ready.

Naturally there were actually people who wanted this abomination of a deal, just like there's people who want "Interactive Movie Theaters" that actually encourage talking and texting (its already happening in China).
