Just interested ? I like the way it ended, but the alternate would have been more true to the novel.

No way..If he did died , we would have never had a chance to see Rambo 2...The baddest of the bad ass Rambo Movie.

I had seen and interview with Richard Crenna years ago and he said that he really fought for the ending that he would kill Rambo. He felt it would make a better film, more dramatic and that it would be poetic that the person who created him (as the perfect killing machine) would be the one to kill him. I thought it sounded like a great idea and I never knew they actually shot that alternate ending! But that didn't play out how I imagined. I thought Rambo would do his shoeshine boy bit, and at the end Crenna would try and console him sympathetically, and then maybe offscreen pull the gun out and shoot him, almost like putting a loved one out of their misery. You would see the regret and compassion in Crenna's character, but know it was the right thing to do. The way they shot it seems a little meh I think.

I love the Rambo movies... I grew up with them but...
I think yes...
it would've made a better film overall... though I'm not sure I would've been able to handle it as a kid.. :lol!

There were a few of these cut scenes added on the recent re-releases of the Rambo movies on DVD and Blu-Ray, i did buy the DVD version of First Blood(re-release) and it has this alternate ending on it. I would have hated to see it all end in the one movie, the sequels were not all that bad at all.

No he had to live Col.Trautman was his only friend left and to kill him just F up that movie...and it would be like saying lets kill our Vets just because they can't live in the real world they fought for.

I 5000% agree with this post,
kill him while he was in tears.
I do enjoy the sequels very much.
But first blood would have been much better its true

Im glad Sly didn`t kill of the Rambo Character, but honestly, after you watch the ending and see how broken down Rambo really is,lost his way, lost his faith in people the alternate ending wouldn`t hurt the movie imo.

It wouldn't have hurt the movie at all, only the frachise. As a Rambo fan, I'm glad it didn't happen, but if I'd never known any other Rambo movies, I think I'd have been fine with him dying in the end.

The filmmakers commented on the DVD set that came out about 10 years ago that the reason they changed it wasn't for story, but for the real life Vietnam Veterans going through similar troubles. They wanted the movie to leave them with a sense of hope about their situation and felt if they portrayed Rambo's only way out as being death, that a lot of Vets going through the same would feel that way too.

It came down to a larger responsibility choice than filmmaking. If First Blood were made now, he probably would die.

I don't really think that would happend, nowadays its all about sequels and where ever money can be made, they will go for it.And still..you think killing him off now would make it any easier on say the soldiers stationed in Iraq, i am sure they are going through some rough times mentally.

I think the death in the book is very well done and had it played out like the novel I would say include it. But that scene is too overdone and honestly just isn't that good, so I'm glad that was not used.

That's pretty much how I feel about it... I think that it's better also for the character if he lives at the end, facing the music without fear or regret. I think it does give off a feeling of hope for those in rough situations like that, to not give up.

I think in the novel, it worked with Rambo dying at the end, but in the movie it works if he lives.

In the book, Rambo killed so many people and was just so crazy, that suicide was really the only way out.

In the movie though, Rambo was portrayed more like a hero and didn't kill anyone. It was best to keep him alive and for him to go on more adventures.

A fun bit of trivia though, David Morell, the author of First Blood, went on to write the novelizations for Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rambo III, even though he killed off his character in the first book.

It would have been more tragic, thats for sure, but I dont think it would have made the film as a whole any better.

Its my fav Rambo film and to be honest I would be fine if it were the only one ever made. The sequals were okay, but without them I wouldnt really be missing anything.
