Just a reminder, The Doctor Who Christmas Special: The Next Doctor premiers this Saturday on BBC America. Almost missed this myself, first new Who in months for us in the States. :D

I have never seen an episode of Doctor Who, so I'll be cutting my teeth with this one.

Thanks for the heads up. If I hadn't been watching "How do you solve a problem like Maria" I'd never have seen the Torchwood promos.

Do yourself a favor and track down some stories from the 70's as they're infinitely more intresting than the current excuse of a show.

I suggest "Genesis of the Daleks","The Talons of Weng-Chiang","The Brain of Morbius","The Deadly Assassin" or "The Hand of Fear".

True! Used to love Doctor Who! Try...... Daleks in Manhattan? I think that's the one I'm thinking of. Been a while though!!!! Selling all my old Doc Who DVD's now :( Still my collections growing in that respect!

don't do it! I think bcm77 lets nostalgia shadow the cheesiness. for an uninitiated the new series is definately the right place to start.

IMO watch this espisode and then use netflix to watch season 1 of the new series.

I never saw any of the old episodes until after the first 2 series of the revived series so nostalgia has nothing to do with it.

I just think the older stories are more entertaining and aren't all about style over substance like the new ones.

I think if you're a newb to Who and going to pick and choose the better episodes to watch you can easily find storylines from the new one that are equal or better than the best of what old Who had to offer and not have to deal with the cheesiness of 70s dinner theatre acting and set pieces.

There's only 1 episode that comes anywhere near to the best of the Classic era and that's "Dalek".

And I'll take "dinner theatre" Doctor Who over "3rd rate school play with a large FX budget" Who any day of the week.

I think the "Girl in the Fireplace" has as much heart and ethos as anything in classic Who. "Blink" even as a Dr Where episode is as interesting and fun as anything in classic Who. Personally, I don't think story is an issue. I think it comes down to what people enjoy as far as pacing and acting. The new ones are pretty hyper in story and Tennants acting, but the old ones are often slow and over cheesey. But I don't think story quality tilts one way or the other. By volume the classics has a lot of good stories, but they also seem to have a lot of bad ones too. It comes with the territory of 20 years worth of episodes compared to 4.

Personally I think a newb might as well start with the new series then move to the classics.

Perhaops I over generalised a bit. There's been more than a fair share of crap in the Classic era in some cases spanning several Doctors ( 6 & 7 to be precise ) as you would expect from something that lasted 26 years but the best stories from the 2nd-4th Doctors are so much better in terms of pacing and characterisation and more than anything else the lead actors all had a natural charisma that enabled some variation in their portrayal during the course of their run, something that the current one lacks.

If the lead character isn't intresting then how good the other characters or the actual story might be doesn't really matter and that's why I feel the current show has declined ,the lead actor showed his full repertoire halfway through his first series and the character is too predictable.

If I like any of his stories it would be "The Impossible Planet/Satan Pit" 2-parter as he was still fairly fresh at that point.
None of Moffatt's drivel has any intrest for me as I don't like Doctor Where? episodes and the others had the sort of romantic BS in it that the show can do without.

2-4 Doctors? Man I can't think of a William Hartnell story that didn't bring a smile to my face. The Aztecs and The Meddling Monk are among my all time favorites.
