Hey Freaks! I'm somewhat of a camera noob, but I know I want the picture clarity that DSLR cameras offer. Do any of you have any recommendations for nice, somewhat affordable ($500-$700) models? I'll mostly be using it to take photos of my two pride and joys, my daughter and my collection :lol Thanks in advance for the help! :hi5:

I have a Canon T1i and love it!!! Check them out. They're user friendly and won't break the bank, yet have a lot of potential IMO.

go to the store.

try out the display models.

find one in your price range.

how hard was that?

PS: a camera is a camera, but the lens is where the quality will differ immensely.

Also check the features-many new DSLR's can shoot HD video and if that's something useful to you I would go for something like that. The video quality with those are really awesome.

Definitely go play with so DSLRs at Best Buy or some other store that carries them. Canon Rebel series is good for beginners, if you're a Canon fan. :)

Nikon, period. I've had 3 since 1988, and all work perfectly still and take excellent pictures.

I highly recommend the Canon Rebel series of DSLR cameras. They are pretty affordable and user friendly, so I'd say they fall in between your simple point and shoot cameras and the professional ones.

I have the Canon XSi and it takes outstanding photos. It's my first DSLR camera and I love it. Since that model Canon has come out with the T1i and the T2i. I haven't used them but it seems to me the only real difference is they are capable of shooting 1080p HD video and maybe a few more megapixels. If that's something you really want then I'm sure you'll be happy with one of those.

As far as lenses are concerned, they can definitely make a difference. I wouldn't really worry about it too much at first though, since the kit lens the Canon Rebel cameras come with are pretty good. If you really want to get a good lens besides the kit lens though, I strongly recommend the EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens. It's affordable compared to other lenses, it takes very crisp photos and if you want to use your camera to take photos of your daughter and your collection, that's where it really shines. The only thing is it isn't a zoom lens but the picture quality makes up for that.

So that's my opinion but of course it's all up to you. I really don't think you can go wrong with the Canon Rebel line but take your time and do some research to see what you really want.

Good luck to you and be sure to keep us posted on what you choose. :duff

Thanks for the input guys! Like I said, I'm a camera noob, so while I plan on going to Best Buy to check out my options, I don't have user experience with any of them :) My goal was to see what models people have had good experiences with. I'll let you guys know what I decide to go with! :hi5:

Good luck with your research on a DSLR! I just sold my Canon Xsi last summer, and kind of regret it. Either way, enjoy what you get and share your experience with us! :duff

In the past I would have said Nikon over Canon. The lenses that Nikon came with in the past was MUCH better then the lenses that came with Canon. Nikon has started to make lower end lenses and put them in packages to make the price better and more competitive with Canon. I would stay away from anyone besides Nikon or Canon. Sony has a great body but lack of lenes, and Olympus changed the mount for DSLR. Nikon and Canon can both use most all of the old lenses which is nice for getting lenses.

I have 2 Nikons, the D70 one of the first consumer DSLRs and a D300s. I have been very happy with both.

Thanks again guys, I'm leaning more towards Canon at the moment. The Rebels seem like a great value!

Yeah, I'd roll with a Canon. I've been using a Canon DSLR to take pics of my collection and when I go to Comic-Con for the last 4-5 years.

I have a canon t2i and love it. The advantage of the t2i over the cheaper canon models is that it shoots 1080p video. The video on dslrs are cool because unlike traditional camcorders they can shoot video with a wider aperture meaning that you can have the nice effect where the foreground is sharp and the background is blurry.

He's right. It's the all in the lenses...a great lens will last forever and can be used on all new cameras you get. A body won't last nearly as long. You want a decent solid body with some really nice lenses. Lenses are where you invest your money.

Thanks Starkiller, I'll keep that in mind :duff

I use a Canon Rebel Xsi and it totally does the job for me. To support what some wise others have said, I also recommend putting more money into a good lens vs. paying for an expensive camera body. I've since thrown out the lens that comes with the Xsi kit I got and upgraded.

Good luck Marf, have fun deciding.

Thanks for the input Plasmid :hi5:

I'm looking at Best Buy becuase of their no interest financing, but my best option there https://www.bestbuy.com/site/Canon+EOS+Digital+Rebel+XS+10.1MP+Digital+SLR+Camera%2C+Bag%2C+Extra+75-300mm+Zoom+Lens/9999146200050016.p?id=pcmprd146200050016&skuId=9999146200050016 is a Rebel XS, not the XSi. Is the XSi just a higher MP?

Also, what lens would you recommend as an upgrade?

What do you plan to do with it? Are you ok with needing more then one lens?
