Sad that you and CollectorGuy feel Lynch's Dune is a good movie. As well as a few others. You guys actually need to sit through it again like I did last night rather than look at pretty pictures on the internet.

You will be remembered.
I don't FEEL sad. I feel content when I remember certain scenes from Lynch's version. And I feel pleased I got to watch this version at 1/2 the cost of a theater outing (with all the food etc.). And got to see a few other things as a bonus before I cancel HBO Max.

Nice to be remembered tho. You can add a star because I thought certain shots from The Last Jedi were so spectacular I made a special trip to a high end theater for a second view, coz I figured I'd never see it that way again. For this Dune, "eh". Unless you like swirling sand. Plenty of that.

Usually I like gritty deserts but this just felt contrived, to me.

I usually like deserts on film too.

Lawrence of Arabia is the obvious one, but it makes me think of films like The Hitcher or The Devil's Backbone. The latter was so vivid you could almost feel the heat through the screen.

Holy crap

I just watched the scene between the doctor betraying Atreides and I think the Lynch version is better on the doctors motivation and plan.

Which one is accurate to the book?

Also the Baron meets Jessica and Paul before sending them out to the desert to be exiled and die and they show the Dr. crying over his betrayal which is actually better than the new version.

Hmm I might need to watch the Lynch version even though it looks like the Star Wars holiday special lol

2 minutes later…

Holy crap the action is really really bad in the Lynch version time to turn it off lol

I do think you need to watch the '84 Dune, jye -- from start to finish -- and not pop in for selected YouTube scenes.

Dune always struck me as a sci-fi Lawrence of Arabia.

Lawrence is 3 hours and 47 minutes.... so Dune is just a sketch by comparison. :lol

Holy crap the Lynch version is so comically bad please disregard my post above about the doctor motivation being better lol

Wow I didn’t know Sting was so ripped :rotfl

Are you talking about the floating big head thing with the ***** mouth?
Sorry I deleted my post lol, yeah I thought the Navigator was kinda a neat puppet when I was younger, I still think it's sort of creepy lol

Of the four movies I’ve seen directed by Denis Villeneuve, namely Sicario, Blade Runner 2049, Arrival, and Dune, Dune is far and away the one that made me feel connected to the characters the most. I did care a lot what happened to Paul, his parents, and Duncan. It’s a very fine effort to bring the novel to life. Looking forward to Part 2.

Just got back from watching DUNE!

It's been two years since I've been to a theater. How I miss the sound of teenagers talking, giggling, sipping their sodas and stuffing their mouths with popcorn. Such an amazing immersive experience to hear people munching on popcorn *cruch cruch cruch* combined with Zimmer's masterful score "Broooggggghhh...." and empty soda cups *fffhhh.. ahh*. 😌

Anyway, I like the film. I wasn't bored and the time went by quickly. I thought the pace was good and the action was fine, not great. The score was cool, but not very memorable.

The world building was nicely done. The films takes its time.

The cast was good too. I like the main character and his powers. He's another Neo/messiah archetype. I like those types of characters.

My favorite worlds were the Atreides planet and Harkonnen world. I hate sand, so Arrakis tested me like that box was testing Paul.

So yeah, good film. Not great. At times the film reminded me of other films. Certain scenes, themes, and plot points have been done already on film unfortunately. They probably stole them from the Dune novel. I don't think it will get a sequel judging by the small amount of people in the theater and their reaction when the film ended, "Oh my god, I have no idea what happened in that film...why you make me see this?"

Anyway,

8/10

I want to see what happens to Paul. I want to see him reach his full potential.

My favorite world so far has to be the Sardaukar planet. The immediate punch of brutalism and throat chanting removes any doubt you're watching a Villeneuve sci-fi. :lol Thankfully I share the same sensibilities.

I've just finished watching it.

Having never seen the original or knowing anything of the source material I'll give it a 7/10 based on my initial thoughts.

I wasn't bored watching it, however I am a fan of Villeneuve so I knew what to expect with the slow build up and World building.

I really wasn't a fan of Paul at the beginning however the film did a good job of changing my view. His character grew throughout and I'm eager to see where his story goes. As @The Clown Prince of Crime said, he's another Neo.

Have we talked about HBO's plan to make a TV series focusing on the Bene Gesserit? They were the most intriguing part of the film for me and, given how many factions they influence, it would surely explore more of the world.

I was surprised by how many characters were killed off already.

Yeah, the House of Atreides, the Harkonnen, and witches were the most interesting things, imo. The sand people and the worms, meh.

Literally just got back from the cinema, and I thought it was good, definitely Villeneuve's best Sci-first so far.

As an adaptation of Dune though it's really the cliff notes version, none of the themes or philosophy comes through. The characters apart from Paul and Jessica are very thinly sketched and are very different to their book counterparts.

It's very much Villeneuve's Dune rather than Frank Herbert's, and yes I do prefer the Lynch version.

I hope part two does get made and will be buying this when it hits 4k blu ray.
