I've got 4K Lynch Dune on in the background right now. My son loves how the body shields turn them into Roblox characters, lol.
Holy crap there is a scene during the big battle where he turns on the shield and jumps on-top of 2 bad guys and all you see is his roblox form landing on them lol

It looks like a giant sandwich bread lol

Just got back from watching DUNE!

It's been two years since I've been to a theater. How I miss the sound of teenagers talking, giggling, sipping their sodas and stuffing their mouths with popcorn. Such an amazing immersive experience to hear people munching on popcorn *cruch cruch cruch* combined with Zimmer's masterful score "Broooggggghhh...." and empty soda cups *fffhhh.. ahh*. 😌

I've just finished watching it.

Having never seen the original or knowing anything of the source material I'll give it a 7/10 based on my initial thoughts.

I wasn't bored watching it, however I am a fan of Villeneuve so I knew what to expect with the slow build up and World building.

I'd give it 6/10 for effort, but it's not a film I'd want to re-watch, or relish having to sit through a second part.

However, Dune as a whole resides in my C class of science fiction, and if I ever get the urge to revisit that universe again, I'd rather watch the 1984 version, because it was more fun, and more visually entertaining. It would take a lot of renewed interest in the story to motivate me enough to put Dune (2021) back on again. (I saved it just in case).

Beyond watching the original, The Children of Dune and this one, I only delved into the books via this, which I bought at a boot sale years ago when I was researching various SF technology (not my photo):

After writing "C class SF" yesterday, I scanned through my movie list and picked out some of the more prominent ones to sort them on the same lines:

A Class (perennial favourites)

Alien series
Blade Runner
Blade Runner 2049
Escape From New York
Firefly and Serenity
The Fifth Element
Judge Dredd (2012)
Mad Max series
The Omega Man
Planet of the Apes (original)
Star Wars – OT, Rogue One, Solo, Mandalorian
Terminator series

B Class (secondary interest)

Battlestar Galactica (original and remake)
Dark Matter
The Expanse
Flash Gordon (1936-40)
Judge Dredd (1995)
Killjoys
Predator series
Spacehunter
Starship Troopers
Star Trek TOS/TOS films

C Class (peripheral interest)

Avatar
Dune
Flash Gordon (1980)
Robocop series

D Class (complete loss of interest)

Stargate series
Star Trek The Next Generation; Voyager; DS9; Enterprise

('A' are the SF movies and series that make me feel warm and fuzzy; 'B' are things that I like to return to; 'C' are things that I rarely get the inclination to return to; 'D' is self explanatory).

Maybe I enjoyed the benefits of being a newbie to Dune. I didn't know anything of the story or World. Being a fan of Villeneuve I was more likely to enjoy the film compared to someone who knows the source material and hadn't seen a Villeneuve film before.

I definitely want to watch it again.

I like your lists although Predator is the obvious exclusion from the A list.

Predator was touch and go. It could easily have snuck into 'A', and the series does crossover into Alien. But my gut was saying no. Predators just don't make me feel as warm and fuzzy as Xenomorphs. :lol

(I'm glad you didn't quote my post too soon, as I was busy editing in the 'D' class because Stargate didn't fit into 'C'. Then I recalled TNG etc which only dropped down the list a few months ago after watching, and giving up on, the TNG Blu-rays).

What about supehero films? You don't like the MCU?

I purposely omitted them for these lists as I view them as their own genre.

At first I was just going to include space related SF, but there were things like Mad Max, EFNY or The Omega Man that I couldn't leave out.

However, I don't really like the MCU anyway. I don't have any inclination to revisit any of the Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Spider-Man, Black Panther, GOTG etc related films.

I like Logan, and the Daredevil, Punisher and Jessica Jones series.

With DC I like Nolan's trilogy (mainly the first two); Suicide Squad (because it always reminds me of EFNY) and The Suicide Squad because it's just so wacky. For DC series I really like Gotham and Doom Patrol.

I didn't mean to hijack the thread with the list, but I considered after writing that Dune was C class, I ought to clarify that it's not a slur (as in a 'C movie'), but where I rate it in my list of SF interests).

Uhh Alien, Predator and Blade Runner exist in the same movie universe bud 😉

i guess you are not a fan of Dark City?

Sleep now!!!

It came as a big surprise to me too. :lol

When TNG first aired it was panned by everyone I knew as being too soapy. There was a saying that Star Wars was space opera and Star Trek was soap opera.

I only watched the odd episode, and didn't watch the entire run of TNG (along with Voyager, DS9 and Enterprise) until QMx's Picard appeared. TNG would've slotted into the A Class back then, because watching it made me feel warm and fuzzy: the acting, the interaction between the crew, the comfortable ship.

Then I bought the Blu-ray set of TNG and began watching again. For a while it was still giving me the same warm and fuzzies. Yet, the further I got into it the less interest I found I could maintain. The characters had actually started to become irritating, and the stories repetitive. I made it to the end of the penultimate season, and haven't been able to bring myself to start the final one.

I already considered TNG as the best of the DS9, Voyager and Enterprise era, so my re-watch consigned all of them way down the list of things that interest me.

TOS and the TOS films remain, because they're classic.
