Just been reading through this thread...and it's funny how people kept justifying SS's reluctance to complete the fellowship in PF form because "they can't make product for a handful of collector's",and how they "can't keep on churning out product when no-one's buying".
mmmmm....funny that,as EVERY SINGLE MEMBER of the fellowship in PF sold out...and that's BOTH the exclusive and regulars OF EVERY CHARACTER......what does that tell you? What's the excuse now???
True......but some PFs like Frodo and Legolas took a couple of years to finally sell out.
I understand people's frustration about getting a complete Fellowship in one form or another (believe me, I would have been waist-high in sour grapes if the Dark Rider PF that was first teased years ago had been tossed aside and never released.) but as it's been said before, SSC is a business and they are there to make a profit. LOTR just doesn't have the rabid fan base of Marvel or SW (again nothing new) where they have the luxury of making a statue of Peter Parker's Dentist and people would still buy it. Basically you have a swimming pool's worth of LOTR collectors in an ocean's worth of Star Wars and Marvel collectors.
I don't believe SS is really at fault here, because unfortunately there have been plenty of opportunities to justify more PF Fellowship members and the messsage arrived loud and clear - human(ish) heroes just don't sell as well as creatures/non-human/villains. Does anyone honestly think a PF of say Denethor or Eomer have a snowball's chance in hell of flying off the shelves? I think not and that's what it's all about.
Now, that being said, I do fault SSC if they don't make good on their promise of completing the Fellowship in the Maquette line. Especially being so close to the finish with only Merry and Pippin remaining. I don't recall any promises being made in terms of the PF line though.
I just don't get all the negativity towards SS lately - they've cranked out some major home runs in the last few years and now we have Weta back in the game full swing which is a huge plus IMO because Middle-Earth is their SW and Marvel lines.
I don't support any one company and I'm not a completist in any line, I just buy what interests me. So as long as there is a least one company making quality LOTR/Middle-Earth items I consider myself lucky.
