I just watched this last week and thought it was pretty good. I liked it because it wasn't a straight up remake, it just shared some common elements (spooky old cabin in the woods, Book of the Dead...) The fact that it had new characters with an entirely different reason for being at the cabin is what made it work for me. If they would have re-cast the original characters (Ash etc...) it would be a big fail IMO. Some characters just can't be re-cast and Ash is one of them. Bruce Campbell is Ash as much as RDJ is Iron Man. The end of the credits was great and I sure as hell hope that the rumors about a crossover movie involving Bruce Campbell are true.:pray:

This movie contained too many elements of the modern cinema which I hate:

1) Senceless animal abuse to elicit sympathy from the viewer;
2) poorly developed characters with whom you can't empathize;
3) meaningless and irrelevant flashbacks;
5) plot that contradict its own fable;
6) blunt anticlimactic finale.

Also gore was all over the place and combined with all of the above it became a dust-to-the-eye thing.

Well, I picked up this movie on Blu for $20; watched all the extras, then watched the movie, then watched the movie again, but with commentary.

I love it - really well done, and a worth successor to the original original. Cant wait for this continuation. Couple characters did get robbed of a lot of backstory, the blonde and dark skinned RN woman, but the hinted as a driector cut someday, so hope for some more backstory.

But, let's be honest, the original had very little backstory itself. Some judge movies now thru rose color tinted memories

Why wouldn't you?

Things from the past had different circumstances, if you don't tint what something was in its day compared to what something is in its time, you're missing out alot in making proper comparisons.

You couldn't have a "worthy successor" without a trailblazer and that alone makes a comparison apples to oranges from the get go.

for myself, I compartmentalize my feelings on the past, so the Evil Dead movies from the 80's are just that - from the 80's

And besides: its just a movie. Bottom line, I found the remake excellent

This plays considerably better as a sequel, which is how I see it (with the rusted Classic out back and the "cameo" at the end).

I agree. I felt like the Classic's appearance was a clever indicator, aside from being an obligatory homage. I like the idea that these circumstances repeat themselves, one way or another.

I must not have watched closely enough, did they have the orginal car setting in the woods?

Hoping its a 3 hour flick based on the alternate ending showcasing his beard growth while in the elixir coma. What would be cool is if they end it with only half the beard length grown out, then they could quickly roll out another sequel the following year with his beard reaching full length and him...
awakening in the destroyed future Earth.
