It suddenly occurred to me (I'd never made the connection before as I've only ever watched "Generations" twice - because I think it sucks) . . .

. . . what came first - Shatner's final line in "Generations" or Takei using it as a (possibly mocking?) catch phrase?

.
Generations was 1994. The first time Takei used it on 3rd Rock was 1996.

Edit: Apologies for being ignorant of the fact that he was already saying it on the Howard Stern show long before 3rd Rock. Knowyourmeme led me astray! ;)

It's interesting how many Shatner defenders there are here. None of the rest of the cast got along with him. Even Nimoy who sometimes called him a friend ran out of patience multiple times with Shatner and wouldn't talk with him. Then he died refusing Shatner too.

I think DeForest Kelley was the only one that didn't seem to have a point where he hated him though he said Shatner needed straightening out.

Evidence seems to point to Shatner being a bit of an egotistical jerk like Chevy Chase :p.

Om 1/6 note I hope they sell him in the yellow uniform... I'm afraid both him and Picard being in their rare versions isn't something I'm as interested in. Still unsure if I'll get TOS.

Oh we all know what a pompous, egotistical jerk he could be, and that he never missed a chance to hog the spotlight. But nearly every movie or TV series has one of those and actors have been accused of far worse over the years. And he does seem to have mellowed over time and takes himself far less seriously now (especially when you compare with some of the interviews he did in the 80s and 90s).

Well… Shatner sounds like the majority of major Hollywood actors: self-absorbed, arrogant, egotistical and narcissistic. Big shock. So… who gives a ****. The majority of them are worthless a-holes who think they’re special, and morons whose lives are insignificant put them on a pedestal, when all these idiots do is play dress up/pretend. Idolizing actors and caring what they do is the providence of weak-minded losers. Doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy some of the performances, I just don’t care to focus on what they’re like as people, what their generally uneducated/brain-washed opinions are, or who likes/dislikes them. Having been around several of them, I could care less about them as people any longer. I just sit back and enjoy what these over paid organ-grinder monkeys do to entertain me.

I've met Shatner several times, and I was fully expecting the "Get a life!" egomaniac we all think of him as. But, he seems to have mellowed and humbled himself.
Now that I'm actually older than Shatner was during the original series, it's hard for me to hold his actions in his 30's against him. I wouldn't want people to come to me in my 90's and say "Yeah, but fifty years ago you were kind of a jerk."
As for Takei...sigh. I think some of these people just need to let it go. Nimoy did. And Takei is clearly, publicly, the one still carrying the feud.
I always wondered why they didn't put Scotty in that Futurama Trek episode, and there are rumors it's because he didn't want to be involved with Shatner. How true that is, I don't know (He did Generations after all), but the fact that it's believable is unfortunate.

Thanks bud (y)

So - that narrows it down to Takei intentionally MOCKING Shatner . . . or it being unintentional. Anyone know WHICH? (or want to hazzard a guess?)

.
Takei said it first; during the release of Generations it was already a common phrase on Howard Stern as per the story in mediame's video. I remember watching Generations in theatres and -- being a Stern listener at the time -- finding the line to be an odd choice, but I'm sure it was coincidental. My guess is the screenwriters were trying to capture a 2001: Space Odyssey feel but still emphasizing brevity with Kirk's "oh my".

It's a 30 year old plot thread - Kirk saw something in the echoes of the Nexus - a rebirth or a reboot? Soon we shall see!

Per the exec Producer of Futurama: when James Doohan was asked to reprise his role in the episode his response was simply "No Way"

I knew "Generations" was 1994, but hadn't (and still haven't) got a clue when he may have originally used the term on Stern's thing OR when it became associated with him.

Your info helps though - thanks.

On the topic of Shatner vs Takei here is a good (long) interview from the Howard Stern Show in late 1994. It sheds light on their different sides of the story. Convo about Takei starts around 8:10. Bonus: you'll hear plenty of George's "oh my" sound drops throughout.

Some interesting news in the latest Variety article (which may relate to future Exo-6 figures):

-The Section 31 movie has Georgiou interacting with a young Rachel Garrett of the Enterprise C.
-The Starfleet Academy series (sigh) is confirmed to take place in the 32nd century
