I was thinking this too. Since his parents still live abroad, I'm guessing he grew up with his brother when he came to the states. His brother was family and probably influential.

New info is coming out that the older brother had been interrogated by the FBI a few years ago about terrorism but wasn't considered a threat and let go. I guess a wrestling, boxing fighter that wanted to be a pro didn't seem like terrorist material.

Supposedly a few months ago he came back from a 6 month stay at Russia, perhaps he got some radical ideas after feeling disenfranchised from America (he stated in that little boxing blog that he felt like he didn't belong or whatever).

Like I said, it seriously wouldn't surprise me if he came back and influenced his little brother, who otherwise wouldn't have been caught up in this mess (based on what folks that know in the Massachusetts area are saying).

Then again, my younger brothers look up to me, but if I started telling them that we should blow people up I bet they'd think I was insane and kick my ***. :lol

Everyone's different though. Who knows what family dysfunctions were going on there. Still a pity that a kid that seemed to have potential would resort to such acts. I mean some of his comments on twitter seem a little "thuggish" and stupid, but I've seen a hell of a lot worse.

EDIT:

These pics are new, I think. To the public anyway.

I remember me and others saying I thought it looked like he was smiling in that one pic posted a few pages back. Doesn't look like he's smiling here.

Wait his whole family came here together. Hits father went back after some illness, and his mother still lives here.

I do always wonder about how that transpires. Same with school shooters. I get how you go from casually complaining to it veering into genuine anger. But how does that "we should kill people" aspect come up? That seems like one hell of a line to cross in conversation. If the other person isn't on board, that's got to be an awkward silence.

Speaking of culture, it's also interesting to note that the kid was pretty much engrained in American culture. I'm listening to these interviews and all his friends and the kids (all American) that knew him from school and other activities are shocked and saddened about his current status, I guess they can't believe he was a bomber. At first none of them believed it, like the kid's parents. It's also a little dirty that complete strangers on facebook and twitter are messaging these people that knew him and sending hateful comments their way. That doesn't seem very appropriate to me.

If you look at what's out there about him, he seemed like a nice kid before the events that unfolded on Monday. I look at all those pics that are now floating around and I don't see some crazy nut job that believed in killing people for some cause. You can usually see that **** on their face, like that Colorado Holmes nutjob.

This is just speculation obviously but it wouldn't surprise me if the older brother that died forced/convinced his little brother to tag along in this thing. If that's the case, that's sort of sad that this kid threw his life away and that he and everyone that knows him will suffer for it. Sure, not as sad as the 8 year old boy that died at the marathon, or the other victims or all the people that were physically harmed at the marathon or the MIT guard that died, but still disappointing nonetheless.

He looks like an ordinary 19 year old kid who went to school, swam, played sports, played games, not the typical "DERKA, DERKA, DIE FOR ALLAH" terrorist that's been burned into our minds.
My mom brought this point up earlier and I wonder if something like this could have been the case as well.

Seems like the older brother is the only one whose gotten into trouble in his life.

I'm not fully caught up on the details so I'm not sure if there's already something out there that disproves this, but I wonder if it's possible that the 19-year-old didn't even know the backpack contained a bomb.

I think people are being a bit too eager to jump to conclusions to be honest. There are lots of things that could have happened, lots of things to consider.

P.S. Just realized I kinda resemble the younger brother. Might be wise to stay inside for a few weeks. :lol

Hey kid brother, that heavy backpack you've been carrying around for me while there's a global marathon event being run... yeah, that's the one. Could you just, like, leave it on the ground and just walk away? Yep. Leave it. I'm sick of it and everything that's in it.

That's a long bow to draw. I can't think of any likely scenario where the perp didn't know exactly what was in that bag and exactly what was going to happen next.

I definitely agree that it's unlikely, but I don't think that scenario is entirely impossible.

Point is, a number of things could have actually happened. Right now I don't think we have enough information to be 100% sure of what went down.

Sounds like you took a nasty hit to the noggin when you fell of that there turnip truck. May the Lord protect you from your own naiveté.

On the other hand, Nail and Ball Bearing stew is a big staple in Chechnya. :lecture
