It occurred to me last week that this year marks 20 years since Advent Children was first revealed. Great trailer too, all of it was so radically different to what you would've expected from FF7-related media at the time. Countless hours poring over screengrabs, trying to figure out who Wheelchair Man was. Early teens well spent.

I was hyped. If I’m not mistaken, the initial reveal came with info from Nomura, where AC was supposed to a 30 min short film, then SE were impressed with it and asked him to make it a feature length film instead.

Yeah that's right, it was only going to feature Cloud, Tifa, Sephiroth and Kadaj too. The script got majorly rejigged after SE wanted a full movie and the original summer 2004 release was memory holed (there was a version of the TGS 2003 trailer with that release window but I literally cannot find it anywhere on the internet now).

It might be barely comprehensible fanservice (AC Complete I will contend is actually pretty good though) but considering it was made on a comparatively small budget after the failure of Spirits Within, it's still a pretty good looking film for the time and it has its moments. Watching the party team up in Edge still gives me chills and Cloud Smiles is one of Uematsu's greatest compositions.

I think Cloud was probably my first man crush (I’m straight). Damn cool.

Yeah the story was filled with moments that felt like it came straight out of some edgy aspiring filmmaker’s short film, where he convinced himself his material was “above everything else out there and is UNIQUE”…in other words, CRINGE.

But once you power on through those moments, it’s a fun film that basically set the direction for future FF games and the KH series.

I still enjoy the hell out of it, warts and all.

I hope Nomura revisits it some day. Give it a true 4K re-render, and re-edit the film to get rid of the cringe and to give it a more conventional narrative. It’ll be one of the best animated films.

You're not wrong, wasn't XIII's combat designed specifically to be "Advent Children battles but playable" or something? None of the FF titles following AC really achieved that until VIIR and potentially XVI imo, but it certainly goes to show the impact that AC had on SE as a whole.

I'd love a properly redone AC, especially with the new English voice cast - imo the only good member of the AC-era cast was George Newbern.

I recently rewatched the film, and I have to admit Kadaj’s voice actor was also fantastic.

He really managed to hit bratty/whiny/unhinged/dangerous/lost at each point kind of perfectly imo. No idea what the VA went on to do, but I think his performance was sadly overshadowed by his being a new character.

Yeah, 13 was exactly how you described it. As well as KH2 with Sora, Riku fighting the last boss. Fun stuff

AC’s eng voice cast did a pretty good job for 90% of the film with 1 performance that despite it being minor, ruined the Eng dub…Aerith, friggin mena suavari (sp?).

Good lord was it awful.

Rachel Leigh cook did OK…but that dilly dally line. OMG…many are to blame for that line. The localizer, the voice director and Cook.

I can only watch AC subbed

I recently rewatched the film, and I have to admit Kadaj’s voice actor was also fantastic.

He really managed to hit bratty/whiny/unhinged/dangerous/lost at each point kind of perfectly imo. No idea what the VA went on to do, but I think his performance was sadly overshadowed by his being a new character.

"DILLY DALLY SILLY SHALLY!"

I like to think it's a cute Japanese saying that doesn't have a direct translation, or something like that. It was 2005, a different time

btw，front hair is exchangeable，with magnet on it. something similar with the ROC naruto figures.

Thanks for the update!! I might be in the minority, but I'm happy he's delayed to wait for a better result. Plus my wallet is so, so empty right now

It's not an easy thing to translate to English considering how little mouth movement you have to work with, but there  has to be something better than dilly dally shilly shally. I refuse to watch the film in English almost entirely because of that line. And Mena Suvari.

Yeah. The way that line came off to me in Japanese was the equivalent to “blah blah blah blah”.

Like…for localization, IMO it would’ve sounded better if Tifa started out with “blah blah blah blah.” Then the 2nd time it should’ve been “woe is me, everything’s bad blah blah blah”.

…or something to that effect.

IDK if ‘zuru zuru zuru” is cringey sounding to a native Japanese speaker…but good lord someone should’ve told Nomura “dilly dally Shilly shally (repeated TWICE)” is a crime against humanity for western crowds.

The film at its time was hampered by being animated/lip sync for Japanese dialogue and the English VAs and the voice director have to work around with that restriction.

Still happens even now just that there are more animation leeways once the antique studios realized they have international audience money.

Does it come with only 1 head for hair replacement instead of 2 heads???

It comes with 2 heads (one with straight-forward eyes/expression) and one with a side-glance expression. It comes with 2 swappable magnetic front hair plates, one "normal", and one "wind-swept".
