I tried re-watching AC myself recently and agree about the edgy cringe thing. One thing that always bugged me was Cloud learning to move on from all his shortcomings in the game and accept himself and then he did a complete 180 in AC. At least the action scenes were cool and video game like. I also miss George as Sephiroth. Such a strong voice.

I kind of view AC as a little bit of a fanfic of sorts. Because to me, Cloud turning into an edge lord after the entire journey of FF7 felt so cheap.

The whole point was exactly what you said. I could see them going for more of a sickly and downtrodden angle from his health, but to just be like, 'mister broody' never sat particularly well with me. AC in conjunction with his appearances in KH/KH2 kind of created this stigma of Cloud being a brooding character and I feel like it's followed him all the way to modern times.

Also AC picking up after FF7 kind of ruins some of the open ended conclusion of the original game too. Which showed Midgar as completely overgrown with plant life.

It's very telling that they had to make a point of demonstrating Cloud actually acting like his original self in Remake promotional materials.

Honestly his character arc in AC never bothered me. One of the things the writer (nojima right?) and nomura did “right” was to have our protagonist start from the bottom and let his journey bring him back up. One of the things I learned in screenwriting class is the ending for the hero or protagonist must be the opposite of how he/she started out.

It’s no different from a character like Rocky. Starting with 5 and all the way to Creed 1, Rocky for all intents and purposes started at the bottom and has to climb back up. Some may not agree with the direction as 4 left him in a happy spot…but you gotta give something for the audience to root for.

For Cloud, maybe the mopey, emo angle was a bit too much…but you gotta remember, it was Nomura’s directorial debut. He took the hero’s journey trope to its max…..aaaand ran it into the ground with Clouds appearances in KH, Dissidia series, the anime specials and so forth. And that unfortunately became Cloud’s persona for a long time, until Remake of course.

But yeah, his arc in AC never bothered me. Clouds always wanted to be strong enough to protect those he cares about. Getting hit with geostigma, a one way ticket to death, made him reflect on his life. Failed to keep Aerith safe, and now the orphans are gonna die to geostigma…I dunno, it seems logical for Cloud, an emotional guy to begin with, to feel remorse, regret, sadness and pain.

That being said…Nomura’s insistence on keeping Cloud that way AFTER AC was a mistake.

One thing I want to add:

Taking a beloved hero and putting him/her in a dark spot in a sequel is necessary. We’ve seen it countless times. 1st movie the hero has a happy ending. 2nd movie either starts with the happy ending taken away off screen, or starts with the hero living a good life…what happens next? It gets taken from the hero. Then the rest of the movie is the hero is trying to get it back, OR is a revenge flick.

Clouds “emo” turn at least isn’t “thinking about killing your nephew in his sleep” level of character assassination.

Tbh I never understood the labeling of Cloud as an “edgelord” in AC. Yeah, he went through a lot of development by the end of the game, but that doesn’t just magically fix everything, especially since his problems in AC aren’t the same as his problems in 7. By AC he’s dealing with massive survivor’s guilt, and when he tries to carve out a life and home he basically gets struck down with JENOVA cancer, and then so does his semi-adopted-son, and he can’t do anything about it. It makes sense that he feels like he deserves to be/is being punished for not being able to achieve a golden ending or whatever else, when he’s got all of these things that feel like punishments weighing him down.

Like disclaimer: it’s not that serious ofc, just being a story nerd lol. but it is kind of funny in a dark humor way to see him called an edgelord for being gloomy while *checks notes* grieving his friend and being terminally ill.

Much better way of describing him, thank you!

The reason I personally disagree with it is because he already did the bottom to the top thing in the original game and the AC angle felt repetitive to Cloud falling in the lifestream from the game. I know it's Nomura's directional debut and all, but I personally am very glad he's stepping down from Remake part 2. One thing I'm glad about is Remake kinda taking AC out of canon. The ultimania omega at least makes it sound like those 3 whispers when you pretty much defy fate were Kadaj, Yazoo and Loz. Same fighting styles and the one has a move called Velvet nightmare. Who knows for sure though. I apologize if I'm sounding really negative. I just personally can't get into AC at all. I do have a few gametoys AC Clouds on pre-order so then again I'm kind of a hypocrite.😆

Nah no worries, it wasn’t negative at all 😁.

It may have been repetitive, but AC took place like…2-3 years after 7. IMO it’s within reason and character for Cloud’s insecurities to emerge again and get worse because this time he’s dying.

So far, my understanding of REmake7 is AC is still canon. Buuuut I guess we’ll find out after 2 and 3 releases.

People have debated about his character in AC for years, but one thing many agreed on was his look/outfit is awesome.😄

I HATED the Last Jedi, but I can at least recognize his astral form outfit was pretty badass.

Remake made me go from generally indifferent to absolutely loving Aeris as a character - never really cared for her in OG. I would've liked to have kept the PAK of her but there was no point keeping one and selling the rest, so it's nice to have a good-looking 1:6 option until GT get around to doing theirs.

If TE Aerith looks good enough I'll be happy with that. GT is not even a guarantee at this point and I kinda figured that if she does come about the TE version will still sell in the second hand market well enough to make up most of the cost for GT. Plus let's face it, it will be really hard to get a pre order also as we'll all be going for it
