Re: Freaktacular 2016

John had a great story for the owl. He said it was his favorite character to draw in the movie because of the voice actor for the character, John Carradine, who was about 70 when they drew the film. He said Mr. Carradine was total old school and showed up to record dressed in his suit. Because he was so old, he had a distinct limp in his walk, and of course his voice was so great for the role. Those things really inspired John Pomeroy in his animation of the owl, and he said he loved how it translated on screen. In fact he drew the owl for a gentleman in line ahead of me, and it was just spectacular looking.

I love hearing stories like that. I may have to watch NIMH again soon. It's been a long time since I've seen it or read the book.

Re: Freaktacular 2016

So not really horror related but I had the chance to meet animator John Pomeroy today. Really great guy to talk with and he seemed to genuinely enjoy meeting with fans. I got him to sign some Tom and Jerry storyboards and a Mrs. Brisby promotional cel that he worked on. Since he was one of the animators for Elliot on Pete's Dragon I asked and he was nice enough to sketch out an Elliot for me right there.
It was an extremely gratifying experience.

Didn't realize he did Tom and Jerry too. That's awesome!

That's awesome! I met Dickie Jones, who voiced Pinocchio, several years ago. I don't think I ever met any famous Disney animators though...

Re: Freaktacular 2016

I didn't either, although tbh it is newer Tom and Jerry things rather than vintage shorts.
Still very cool though.

Ahh, I was wondering that as well. LOVE the old-school T&J cartoons! Two of my best friends are named Tom and Jerry, so I am constantly reminded of the cartoon, whenever I say their names together (which is often, and I never ever ever have said Jerry and Tom when referring to them - it must be Tom and Jerry). But once they became friends, it wasn't as good. And the much newer ones, I haven't even seen. The classics are the best!!!

Re: Freaktacular 2016

I YouTube some of the old cartoons just for the nostalgia lol. Droopy, Mighty Mouse, looney tunes, etc.

I've enjoyed introducing them to my kids as well. By far the favorite is Bugs Bunny.

Looney Tunes never gets old. I couldn't tell you how many times I've seen those cartoons, and I still laugh. If anything, I appreciate them much more as an adult.

Wow, that's really cool just for the experience alone! Congrats! :duff :hi5:

Thanks! It was a completely amazing experience, and John was very willing to chat with fans while he was signing and drawing. The entire time I was there a small group was around him asking questions and engaging in conversation. I would have to rank it as one of the top geek moments of my collecting life!

Oh yeah! One of my favorites as well.
I also love all the inappropriate material (by today's standards).
But what was deemed acceptable back then was different.
Shows you how much the times have changed.

The times have definitely changed and not for the better in many ways.
