No Leto joker = I'll give it a chance....Harley movie and suicide squad 2.....wouldn't even rent em

Re: FREE AT LAST [or "How the Joker escaped Leto's D-Bag Ass with Marty Scorsese's He

Keep in mind they could always pick another d-bag to play his origin. If this is outside our current s-storm of the DCU then I'm all in.

Re: FREE AT LAST [or "How the Joker escaped Leto's D-Bag Ass with Marty Scorsese's He

I don't really think this will see the light of day, either, even though I hope it does, but, honestly, I think this would be a smart move for WB. Frankly, if there's anything at work here, presently, I would say it's fear. I firmly believe that every executive presently at Warner Bros. have each of their respective ass holes clenched in terror and anxiety at whether or not Justice League is going to take an atomic level dump all over the good will that they've earned with Wonder Woman.

That being said, ever the Boy Scouts, I feel like they're already preparing for that possibility and trying to figure out a way to move forward without throwing the baby out with the bath water. It may sound callous, but everything about that press release regarding Snyder's departure seems like them covering bases in the event that Justice League flops. "We fully support Snyder," "he'll have his pick of projects when he's ready to come back to work;" it all strikes me as a very polite way of moving him away from the DCEU. On top of that, as I mentioned in the JL thread, the fact that, after several unsuccessful attempts to get The Flash's solo film off the ground they've decided that their latest course of action is to make a "Flash Point" movie, I think it's almost a guarantee that, should Justice League fail, they use that as their Days of Future Past/History Revision project.

What's interesting about this, though, is that, in establishing DC properties as a banner under WBE that goes beyond continuity, they are, in essence, foolproofing their futures. Don't like a particular interpretation? We have another in the works. Plus, it opens the door for experimentation and, in some ways, even a degree of creative freedom that might lure talent, writers, and directors that otherwise might never even consider doing a DC movie to dip their toes into the waters.

Oh, and it doesn't have Jared Leto. **** Jared Leto. Goddamn dumpster baby. Those "damaged" goods can go **** themselves. Piece of ****.

Definitely agree 100 %. The dceu is hanging by a thread right now and if jl fails then it's game over and time to start from scratch with flash point. Also Leto joker sucked, almost no one liked him. From the stupid tats to the kitten purring

A joker origin movie is their worst idea yet

Yep. Gibson was directing SS2 at one point too so no one should get their hopes up of Scorsese staying on board :lol

I think a Joker origin could work, but only if the first act or maybe hour of the film focuses on the guy before he becomes Joker. It could be an interesting story, maybe even great, if they get someone like Jake Gilehaal to play him.

Still, it's a weird idea because why not use Leto and make an origin story with him if he's the DCEU Joker? Having two different jokers seems unnecessary, and what about Batman? They'll have to introduce another batman.

Leto is a great actor. The approach to his Joker wasn't great, but that wasn't only his choice.

This makes no sense :lol
It's essentially how DC movies operated prior to Man of Steel and the Snyderverse. We had DC movies that were not connected to each other at all. Same with the DC animated films until recently. It could work just fine IMO. We don't need to have "interconnected universes" all over the place. And with WB, this approach may be far better, because you don't get committed to bad ideas beyond a single film. You just have to trust the audience enough to not walk them through origin stories, and established actors/characters in roles across multiple films. That also takes a bit of skill from writers and directors. But I say--give them a shot! Can't be worse than what they've got going now (with the exception of Wonder Woman).

A joker origin movie is their worst idea yet
Yeah, putting aside all I said above, any attempt at really fleshing out Joker's origin is just a terrible idea. Unless you want to go the Alan Moore or Nolan route of a surrealistic and incomplete origin story that is used to promote the Joker's agenda, and may or may not be true.

Re: FREE AT LAST [or "How the Joker escaped Leto's D-Bag Ass with Marty Scorsese's He

Batman 89 already featured a Joker origin story (set in the 80's no less!)

I do agree that there's nothing that says everything has to be connected with the same continuity as other films though.

Re: FREE AT LAST [or "How the Joker escaped Leto's D-Bag Ass with Marty Scorsese's He

Everybody seems to be freaking out about the origin story, but Burton did it and we love '89. I don't give a ****, really. It wouldn't be the first time they did it, it won't be the last, and if it provides an escape hatch from DCEU, it's worth it.

For once, we agree on something.:lol

Making Joker the killer of Batman's parents was ridiculous. I'm not as big a fan of '89 Bats as others here.

Joker is one character who benefits tremendously from being mysterious, and not being humanized. For others, this isn't as important. But if you knew why the Joker ticked, he would become far less interesting than he is IMO. Bruce Timm and Chris Nolan understood this.

I'd rather there wasn't a definitive joker origin story ... that would take away some of the mystery about the character. Based on suicide squad, they would likely look to make him a sympathetic figure in some ways as well and that would be super lame.

I prefer the approach taken by the comics where many different origin stories have been presented but none are ever confirmed as his actual origin. You can never be sure if the origin story you are presented with at any given time is real or just the Joker playing/messing with Batman (... well until Zero Year but that's not in my canon haha). TDK captured that quite well with Ledger telling multiple versions of the story of how he got his scars ... we don't know if any of the stories are real or if he is just messing with the other characters and us. It's all a game to the joker and we are his audience.

Telling his origin story would take something away from his character.

You have summed up everything I said more succinctly haha

Yeah, I'm not sure how else you can make a Joker movie or story with him as a protagonist without making it an origin story or making him a sympathetic figure...unless, the story is told from the point of view of another character, like Jonny Frost in the "Joker novel."

My philosophy is this: I hope you diehard Batman/Joker fans get exactly the movie you've always wanted to see (assuming you haven't already with B89 or TDK or what have you.) :duff

I may be able to enjoy silly movies like Suicide Squad but that's in great part to not really having any need for the characters to be a certain way.

I've got SW OT/RO, ALIENS, LOTR, and Cap Trilogy. Everyone should be so lucky.

Is anyone else hoping Willem Dafoe gets the role?
