Buttmunch, I'm a Commander-phile, too, and I see what you're talking about with the mask (which is my favorite version). I see doing a little customizinf will be in order. Maybe just drawing the line down the mask and adding the silver mohawk design....

Glad I'm not the only one that thinks that about the mask. I mean the line is clearly visable in any frontal angle so it can just be there if it isn't a point.

Your custom Commander is still the best Commander I've seen (in anything besides the 3 3/4 line). I wish somehow Sideshow could make on... or Hasbro make a great one :lol

I like the helmeted mask too, but I still like the cloth one. I always thought he should just have the cloth mask underneath the helmet instead of switching it. While I'd love to see what is really behind the mask, I'm not sure I'd like it. The GI Joe Movie is not apart of the series as far as I'm concerned. When CC wears the hood he isn't a blue freak with 12 eyes. I do wonder if he is mess up like Vader or just paranoid like... well any ruthless dictator/terrorist.

Edit: This bust seems to have that point in the middle.

What ever happened to that rumored live action GI Joe movie? I think it was rumored around the same time as Transformers. I wonder who they would cast as the various parts. Too bad the guy that voiced Cobra Commander is dead. He would have been great to have back, like Optimus Prime in the Transformers movie.

Personally, I think he's just paranoid.

Probably, but there was one episode where he was eating unmasked (not shown of course) and Destro walks in. He grimaces and Cobra Commander says "It takes a strong stomach to watch me eat, eh, Destro?" This would seem he is messed up like Vader some how... or that he was the blue 12 eyed freak from the Movie.

The Comics are different though right? He might just be paranoid in those. I'm not very familiar with them.

Personally I picture him kinda like Voldemort - his nose is missing, teeth my look snake like, bald, pale, etc. More of Darth Vader meets Voldemort. His deformites would be results of injuries and not just deformities.

Update- Vintage Packaging confirmed!!!

From Hasbro:

In 1982 Hasbro introduced a new line of products that changed the landscape of boys action figures: G.I. JOE A REAL AMERICAN HERO. The innovative line of 3-3/4-inch, fully articulated and fully poseable action figures complete with molded uniforms, gear and vehicles, quickly became one of the most memorable toy lines of the 1980s.

The A REAL AMERICAN HERO line launched not only a successful line of toys, but was also represented in an animated series and in a Marvel Comics series. Over the years, the G.I. JOE vs. COBRA storyline provided an opportunity to introduce more than 500 figures, including some ‘real-life’ people, such as Sgt. Slaughter and William “Refrigerator” Perry.

Now, twenty-five years later, Hasbro will commemorate the anniversary with the release of a special edition series of A REAL AMERICAN HERO figures that features the twenty-five most popular characters in the history of the line.

I'm sold!

Hmmm... if those figures we saw will be in 5 packs I hope they do a Joes and Cobra pack. I'm more likely to just by the Cobras since I would have gotten CC, Destro, SS, and possibly Baroness and CT. Not as fond of the Joes though.

Oh you'd be surprised.

A lot of big Joe fans (like myself) consider the GI Joe comics as the "official canon" for the series...I think Hasbro pretty much does as well. The first Marvel series was the best, it was filled with a lot of intrigue regarding the characters and the writer (Larry Hama) built the Joe-mythos that a lot of fans follow to this day. Devil's Due now has the license to the comic and has continued publishing it.

But back to the Commander! Actually, under the mask Cobra Commander is well.....just a regular guy. No deformities, no scars or anything. The purpose of the mask is not only to hide his face (he has escaped on several occassions using the advantage that barely anyone knows his "true" face) but it also is symbolic that he is the nameless, faceless terrorist leader and is feared because of that.

Cobra Commander was originally a used car salesman...an American "Everyday-Man". His downspiral began when his War Vet brother was killed in a car accident (the same car accident that killed Snake-Eyes' parents and sister). His marriage fell apart and he hired the mercenary Firefly to try and kill Snake Eyes, for some reason he became obsessed with Snake Eyes as the surviving son of the tragic car accident that took his beloved brother's life. Of course that whole plan failed, Zartan got involved, bungled the job, but that's another story.

Eventually Cobra Commander became disillusioned and paranoid, blaming all his problems on "the system" and the US government. He traveled the country with his son, Billy and found more people who followed his ideal of toppling big business and the government and eventually came to the town of Springfield which was struggling under the thumb of big business and eventually wrestled the town from that control and corrupted it for his own purposes. COBRA was born soon after.

In the comics he is is a stark contrast from his cartoon version, but share many similarities as well. He shares the same love of grand schemes like his cartoon counterpart but the comic CC is also very, very clever and very brutal as well. He is very Hitler-like in that he has a charming and dominating personality and is extremely egotistical as well. His men fear him but can't help but to be attracted to his warped ideals that he preaches about with his outstanding orator skills.

One of his crowning moments in the comic series is when he buried a bunch of COBRA traitors alive in a landlocked frieghter under a volcano...including his own son, Billy. Some survived and found a way to escape like Billy, Storm Shadow, Zartan and Firefly but many others died from eating poisoned food.
