I'm pretty sure there was not a single film at the time that could compare with the level of visual sophistication that The Phantom Menace offered. New tech or not, no one had ever taken it that far.

Plus, the music was untouchable. Still is. And the story was a hell of a lot more creative than Fern Gully and Dances With Wolves will ever be. :monkey3

lucas was being creative then. dont confuse it with "revolutionary" which was what the above poster said.

music was better than avatar's, i give you that. but phantom menace's story was a mess! not to mention the lousy acting of some principal characters and lucas's bland directing. dances with wolves that avatar is, its story structure is as solid as a rock. and the fact that avatar has no jar jar, that alone gives it the edge by default. :)

I didn't say TPM was solid storytelling. But, it was incredibly inventive.

I will give DWW credit for being well put together. It still bored me to death.

Hmm i cant help but feel that the TPM and the others were revolutionary in the sense that it showed the strengths and also weakness of CGI. Too much? Too little? I dunno, i guess without the innovation we wouldnt have films like lord of the rings which borrowed from old school effects and new state of the art CGI, both of which owe heavily to Lucas and his productions...

"HaHa i've got 3, count em THREE, generations of SW FANS HOOKED into my merchandise empire.

:)

I guess I'm a generation 1 and 3 as I prefer the OT and really enjoy the Clone Wars series. Still have issues with the PT, but it is what it is and even though it didn't really meet my expectations I still enjoy them, even though some scenes make me want to scratch my eyes out :lol

Yup. People damn him to hell and hate the PT up and down. But those same people own DVD versions of it and as soon as it is out on Bluray, will buy those too. Then come back on here and say he sucks.

Lucas is a genius!

I have a friend who played Darth Vader in the Disney Star Wars weekends a few years ago, and George Lucas picked him personally to play the role due to his height and size - 6'5" and 200 lbs+. He said Lucas was a fantastic gentlemen, really funny and very personable. My friend kept calling him "Mr. Lucas," to which he finally replied, "Call me George."

I am extremely jealous of said friend, considering he doesn't really care much about Star Wars. After his meeting with Lucas, though, he became more interested.

i cant get over how gullible people are. it's all about lives of celebrity to these people. 'oh he takes care of his children, that makes me want to watch his movies.' 'oh he shouts profanities and jumped on oprah's couch. screw him! screw his films!'

Actually, nobody here's said anything like that.

phantom menace employed the tech already available at the time. it didnt invent anything new. avatar on the other hand had to invent 3 advancement in film techs to be what it is.

I love it when Internet fanboys promulgate myths as fact. It's cute. But reality aside, why do you limit "revolutionary" to "advancement in film techs?" That's absurdly myopic.

If not for Jar Jar Binks, there would be no Avatar or it's boring ass story.

Chew on that for a bit.

I'm 38, I grew up with Star Wars, can't remember a point of my life without it. My nieces and nephews and daughter watch Star Wars, It transcends generations. Can't really think of too many films that can do that.

It seems he sees the movies for what they are MOVIES. Sometimes I think we take Nostalgia a little to far, at least I do, but I am working on it....

This is why I've always loved Lucas' attitude towards people questioning his final product. He has always been like this... "love it or hate it, I don't care. Its just fiction and this is what I wanted to make."

~~However, I do hate how he's always trying to get $$ out of everything related.

Yep, my experience as well... as strange as it is SW really permeates my daily life. Talking about figures here, watching films, talking about films or just looking at my collectibles; Star Wars is pretty big deal.

As much as I love other movies and franchises no other has that much long term prominence for me.

you brought up the point of lucas being a good dad. and now another brought up the point of him being a personable guy. how's that got anything to do with anything again?

what myth? a film that didnt advance the film tech is just not "as revolutionary as" the film that did 3 advancements. there's nothing fanboyish about that statement. that's just logic 101. starwars OT was revolutionary, and i know some OT fans who even think that nothing in the phantom menace that lucas couldn't have been done 20 years earlier. personally i see nothing "revolutionary" about the prequels. at all.

I love SW. (I am mostly an OT guy, but i do EU and PT on the side :))

You know the saying "it's like Pizza, even when it's bad it's kinda good"

/waiting forever for the TV show!
