Just thought I'd post some 1/6th projects I'm working on at the moment, using my 3d printer.

- Speeder Bike
I can't afford an official one, so I thought I could make one, I'm pretty decent with blender so I gave it a go.

- Han in carbonite
I saw a review on the sideshow one and decided to make one.

- CCFL Lightsabers, I made and printed the hilts (No way I'm gonna destroy my HT hilts

I just got a Elegoo Saturn a few months ago, and it's just so much easier to get stuff accomplished. I've only made a few things so far, but they have all been amazing. There is a definite learning curve, at least for me. There was much clenching of fists, and gnashing of teeth at times, but it all worked out.

I'm almost done with my first project, which is a Mimban Stormtrooper from Solo: A Star Wars Story. I printed the forehead armor on my 3D printer. So far this thing looks great. Before I got the Saturn I spent months ruminating over how I was going to scratch build that forehead armor in a convincing way.

3D printers are totally worth it!

I would love to get a 3D printer but I’m just not sure I’ve got the chops to operate one. I think I’m more analog than digital.

On a side note if anybody who has one wants a paying job or two let me know. I’d like a few prints of some Star Wars floor grating for some custom stands.

Looking good! There's a facebook group called 1/6 scale star wars and marvel 3d printers and customs. People post their own creations and yours would slot right in with the rest

Just discovered this thread! I finally got an Elegoo Saturn for my birthday a couple of months ago after talking about it all year. Absolutely hooked. As mentioned above, there is a learning curve, but I was watching a lot of YT how to's and reviews before I got it. There's a lot of handy info there for beginners. Once you get used to the processes involved, it can be extremely satisfiying! These are some of my models I've been working on.
I would also recommend getting an air brush and some nice paints. Again, there's heaps of tutorials out there.

Very nice work! Impressive modelling skills there. Have you thought about making the files available on something like CG Trader?

For my next printer job I’m challenging myself with something a little more difficult. I’ve started work on the bug looking droid, “Zero” from Mandolorian.

The hard part will be his legs. The whole model is actually a 1:1 scale cosplay costume. Zero has legs that are CG on Mandolorian, because the knee and ankle joints have holes that go straight through like K-2SO, and his hip articulation on the show is very robotic so the costume doesn’t express those areas well, since it’s made for a man to wear. I’m modifying parts from both a Darktrooper and K-2SO model to make Zero’s legs.

It’s going to be a nightmare, but I love banging my head against the wall.

In all seriousness it will be an awesome learning experience. I need to know how to do these sorts of things if I’m going to make accurate and convincing custom figures.

I just started printing today. Here’s a progress pic of the work so far.

I've been printing some ships for my younger brother, and they seem to have troubles with the models across a wide range of fandoms. To fix problems, I've been relying heavily on Netfabb. :/

I am more of a laser cutting person than a 3D printing person. I understand how to build up flat surfaces of different materials and can draw on adobe illustrator. How difficult is it to learn the software, and what program do you use?

Thanks. I'm not necessarily interested in the cheapest printers. I can budget $1K-$2K or so depending on printing capability. A few years ago these were running $20K+, which wasn't practical. At that time there were inexpensive units that could print things like coffee mugs and simple sculpts which would also have all the layer rings and imperfections. Higher quality prints had to be sent out to service bureaus like Ownage. It's only been in the last 2-3 years that I've seen folks 3D printing highly detailed parts, head sculpts, and full statues (as large as 1:4 scale). I don't know if at-home 3D printing has reached a level that could conceivably bypass the service bureau print > mold > cast workflow (which gets quite expensive) and instead would allow me to print out something like a highly detailed 1:6 head sculpt or a 1:4 statue and send it directly to a professional artist to build and paint. I've been sitting on some 3D sculpts I commissioned a few years ago, waiting for the technology/price to catch up. There are also a few purchasable sculpts that have caught my interest. Right now I'd just like to get a general idea. If it sounds feasible, I'll start doing more research. If it's still a couple more years off I'll just wait it out.

There are huge variations of 3D printers available. I went to an expo several years ago and the range of price, print detail and capability was all over the map. The landscape was so intimidating and overwhelming, I stopped researching which one would work best for me.

Resin printers give you better result, but it has health concerns.
