I have been contemplating this for such a long time now.

Having a PS3 has always sort of pushed me toward this.
I have around 350 DVD's including box set's and what not.

The major thing stopping me is the price i would get for the DVD's
Some you get more and some less but £0.20 for a film is ridiculous
i know the company's need to sell them on but i would rather hand them out in the street for free.

Out of all the film's I have I would only actually watch about 40 multiple times.
Terminator , Gladiator, bourne film;s and so on.

Is the difference that much better than a upscaling DVD player.
As i know a lot of the films are just transfered on to a blu ray disc
and not difference really.

What would you do?
As at the momment they are in storage and no were to display them
due to the amount of statues and display cabinets i have.

The time to have done that would've been when Disney announced their choice of BluRay over HiDef, ending the platform wars. Currently I buy all new movies on BR and only upgrade the ones in a series that's still pumping out sequels, or my old favorites. Otherwise, I'm content with DVD.

:goodpost::exactly:

Use that money on new movies you don't own!

I got a blu ray layer that plays regular dvds. it looks just the same as the handful of blu rays I own

What Bluray's would those be? My Bluray copies of "Casino Royale" and "Quantum of Solace" vs my dad's DVDs are a world of difference.

And what ink says is true. If you don't have an HDMI cable, get one. It'll make your DVDs look a world of difference than the traditional A/V cables.

scott pilgrim vs the world
ESPN 30 for 30 box set
green lantern
HP 1-8 box set
teen wolf
the crow
the rocketeer
sucker punch
star wars saga

I have an HDMI cable and a 40" flat screen lol

I can watch Blurays through my PS3 but I don't buy them often, unless it is a movie that has great visuals. Regular type dramas and such, I'm fine with just the DVD.

Now days I'm noticing a lot more that you can get a BluRay for just a couple dollars more during the week of release...so sometimes that will tempt me if it's a movie I really like.

Unless it's a movie you will watch over and over, I'd just hang onto the DVD. I only buy Blu-rays now and will replace a DVD if it's something I would watch a lot or if I can get it for a good price.

Good point! Sometimes BluRay can be a curse. Cate Blanchett's Spalko on the regular Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull DVD looks great. On BluRay, however, no punches are pulled and you can see her Gollum beard. :gah:

Yeah like most are saying don't restart your collection. Keep the DVDs and just buy blurays of new releases and films you really want as a blue.

As well as superior picture the audio is superior in every aspect. But I'd only upgrade your favourite movies and just buy new releasing going forward.

I concur. There's a few movies that I'm guilty of buying in Blu (in addition to DVD) but those are rare. Not only that, but I rarely by movies anymore. When there is a release I want, I go for Blu typically.

(Can't wait for 'Drive' next week. :yess:)

Sometimes this is even more evident than the upgrade in picture. If you have surround sound (which I just got for the first time in October), it's so great in Bluray!

I think I'll agree with what most people have said above me......just pick up Blus of the films that have great visuals and are just awesome (I just picked up Scott Pilgrim/Thor/Cap America). While DVDs aren't as clear as Blus, that doesn't make them obsolete; as they still get the job done.

And if you don't have an HDMI cable DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT buy a MONSTER cable. They are a waste of money and the same quality as the $8 cable you can get off amazon

i'd wait it out. they'll probably be an even better format within 5 years with higher resolution.

I actually had this same dilemma 2 years ago. I also had 350 dvd's in my collection so I understand how much money you have probably put into your collection , and your attachment to the collection itself. I chose to sell my collection 2 years ago b/c bluray prices were coming down and I knew it was only a matter of time before blurays were the dominant platform. I received close to $700 for all of my collection which was about half what it had been going for 6 months prior, and not even close to what I payed (I won't go into detail but my collection was full of only the best). I have to believe that you will take an even bigger loss, but if you want my opinion on what you should do? I think you should sell ALL OF THEM!!! Don't keep a single dvd. I loved my collection and I have not missed it for even a second. I have actually amassed a pretty big bluray collection now, and I refuse to get any dvd's b/c they are just to inferior to blurays. Trust me just sell them all and don't look back, and I assure you that your venture into bluray will be a pleasurable one as you will use your experience with purchasing dvd's to build an even better collection this go around.

Then just give up the rest of your belongings, your clothes and find a nudist hippy commune and spend the rest of your days, hugging trees! :exactly:
