I've been slowly upgrading my DVD--> HD collection. Definitely go with Blu for brand new movies that are effects driven, or you have a nice speaker setup. I've been ripping mine and putting them on a NAS. To me 95% of older movies don't really look any better on Blu Ray releases so I just stick with the DVD quality.

those people that can't see the difference in an up-scaled dvd and a blu ray either need to have their eyes checked....or they need to get a good tv....don't know why this is so hard to comprehend....

Yeah, my wife tried to tell me she couldn't see the difference. So luckily I had a DVD and BluRay copy of a movie. After seeing a minute or two from both she was easily convinced.

I figure a lot of people really don't pay much attention to grain and image quality, so until its directly pointed out they really don't see or notice anything significant. But once you do you never go back :lecture

There is a difference, but not enough to go out and spend another $15 on the same movie. Comedies an drama type movies l don't see a huge difference (a little shaper) worth the extra cost and l have a good tv. Now when it comes to action movies, cgi related movis theen yes get on or replace with blu ray..

I get that sometimes too with friends and just say 'wha?!?!'

I don't own a lot of Blus, but some like Pirates of The Caribbean are just down-right impressive in HD.

I've replaced only a few of my DVDs, like the Alien movies, the Pirates movies, Blade Runner, Fincher movies, etc. But now with the recent purchases I've been getting the combo DVD/Blu packs. I still kinda like to have the DVDs because I have a portable DVD player I still use on occasion, as well as being able to play them on my laptop. I am fearful of the day Blu Rays become obsolete, which is why I've been conservative about replacing more of the DVDs I own. Just seems like a waste.

I skipped getting the SW saga on Blu partially because I anticipate if Lucas were to ever release the unaltered OT movies, it would only be after the next generation of technology comes out.

Don't forget about the 3D versions too!!! As soon as they announced Episode I will be coming in 3D I told myself Uncle George must have more $$ in his eyes.

.

Same here. l replaced the Alien, LOTR, Iron man, predator 1 and 2 and Pirates movies on Blu ray which blow the dvd versions away. Then l only bought a handful of my favorite movies on blu that l all ready had on dvd, some where only slightly better. Many of my favorite movie that l upgraded l am also keeping on dvd.

I have 32" TV. Don't know when I'll upgrade given that I don't have hundreds of dollars to spend on another one and mine is not even three years old.

I have maybe 15 blu-rays. I've only replaced a couple of my dvds. Even now, I'll still buy the dvd if it's cheaper and if the movie doesn't have a ton of action/special effects. It all depends on the price and the movie - if I can get the blu-ray for cheap, then I'll go ahead and get it. But if I save money when buying the dvd, I'll get the dvd unless it's a "must have" movie with effects in it.

I purchase all of my tv shows on dvd.

If I had hundreds of dvds.....I would never replace them all with blu-ray. Big waste of money.

i would get rid of most of the DVDs and start buying blurays. The reason I said most is because some DVD sets, special editions, collector's edition etc. are better than their bluray counterparts. Some blurays also have okay to bad picture quality so sometimes you are better off just having the dvd version of them i.e. Commando and Predator 2. When I made the transition to bluray i still kept a lot of my dvds for the above reasons I mentioned. So yeah I guess your collection should be a mixture of dvds and blurays.

I also have a crap load of dvds but as a rule I now only buy blu-rays. Although I said to my self I wouldn't double up on movies I already own on dvd I couldn't help but upgrade on the aliens quadrillogy and Predator. Apart from those it's now full steem ahead on blu's. Also if you dont have a full 1080p tv and a HDMI amp with surround sound you would not be getting the full HD experiance from your blu-rays...:wink1:

But if you are going to upgrade from DVD to Blu, do yourself a favor and check out reviews of individual discs before you pull the trigger. Especially on older titles.

To save money, the studios sometimes just port over the same transfers they used for the DVDs onto the new format. So sometimes it's not actually a bump up in picture or sound quality. So while it might technically be in a higher def format, it doesn't look any better. If you're going to replace a DVD, make sure the new version is actually better. I've gotten stung a few times. (The first issue of Predator on Blu, anyone?)

My rule of thumb: If you see a Blu that is super cheap and has been for quite a while ... like, say, under ten bucks ... there's a good chance it might just be one of those quick and dirty low-rez transfers.

Make sure to check with the comments section on Amazon, or if you really want to dig into the nitty gritty, there are a bunch of sites dedicated to the tech specs.

I'd agree with Bucky on checking reviews - whether a film is a good transfer or not can be very hit or miss. I wouldn't go by the ten dollar rule though, as most blus can be had for $10 or less these days if you're paying attention.

And while I wouldn't recommend replacing an older movie you have on DVD with a blu 'just because', I can't understand buying any new movie on dvd, action or not. Blus aren't that much more expensive, so why buy the lower quality if you're spending the money anyway?

To clarify my "ten dollar rule" ... I'm not talking about spot sales where a $15-$20 Blu gets reduced temporarily. I'm talking about Blus that come out at $10 and stay at that price (or go lower). Those are typically the no-frills cheap transfers.

But if you're finding quality Blus for $10 bucks or less, I need to start shopping where you're shopping, man! Any tips?

That's what l have done with every dvd l have replaced, some l am glad l didn't get after reading reviews, like "Heat" on blu ray. It's suppost to be hardly better then the dvd, but also comes with sound problem, so l will stick with the dvd version. Same with "XXX" not suppost to be very good transfer.

I know I might sound odd, But I don't feel the need for the better quality of Blu Ray right now, maybe eventually, and the movies do look really nice, but is not something I need to change right now, is not like DVDs Look like crap, they still look okay to me, is not like they look like cheap crappy bootlegs or anything, Blu Ray might look a lot nicer, but to me DVDs still look as okay as they always have,

Most people waist money upgrading because they seem to think they have too. They pay for the newest and coolest stuff all the time, then the better stuff comes out. They then sell the other stuff they bought for almot nothng compared to what they paid and upgrade, they play along in all the BS, "buy our product (blu rays) because they are a little better then dvd" ,most blu rays are only slightly betrer then dvd (comedies, dramas). "Then when you do that with you entire collection we will change the format and you can spend a fortune upgrading again".

*Coughs* *Looks at the for sale section.*

This forum isn't any better either. A lot of people buying figures or customs and only owning them a minimum of 1 - 3 months then ditching them for the next best thing.
