Here's what l noticed since l got my Blu ray 2 months ago. I went crazy rebuying alot of my favorite dvd's on blu ray. Many of them only looked a little bit better, quick example Boiler Room, knockaround guys, Boogie Nights, Fargo ect, not really worth it unless they are your favorites. Though many action cgi type movies l bought blow the dvd version away, Pirates, LOTR, Iron Man, I Robot ect.

So l decided only to buy blu rays of new movies that deserve to be on blu ray like action movies and cgi type movies. I see no reason to buy comedy movies on blu ray that are almost twice the cost of the dvd version and only have a little bit better PQ, so l still have bought some comedies and regular dvd's since.

So to some it up, no reason to upgrade all your dvd's on blu ray.

WOW! Thanks so much everybody.

Well there is some great advice there and from what everyone has said
keep the DVD'S and just buy my favourite on Blu ray.

I do have HDMI and a 40" flat screen Sony Bravia although the old version
i think the TV you have make's the most difference.

So look's like i'm going to get Terminator 2 as my first blu ray and as i said earlier I would only re-watch about 30 of them , no point buying the likes of blue streak or nothing to loose on blu ray.

Thank's again everyone

i told myself when they started releasing BDs i wouldnt buy the ones i have on dvd to blu ray. good choice for me as it would have cost me all sorts of money considering the amount of dvds i own. but now i dont buy dvds jst blu ray

I buy all blu now but I have a lot of DVDs. Certain films that are just dramas with no big special effects are fine for DVD, same with such things as South Park or other cartoons. A lot of comedies as well, don't need to be upgraded, IMO. I'd just get rid of the ones you want to upgrade and keep the rest.

I think I'll agree with what most people have said above me......just pick up Blus of the films that have great visuals and are just awesome (I just picked up Scott Pilgrim/Thor/Cap America). While DVDs aren't as clear as Blus, that doesn't make them obsolete; as they still get the job done.

And if you don't have an HDMI cable DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT buy a MONSTER cable. They are a waste of money and the same quality as the $8 cable you can get off amazon

Ha yeah I got stung buying a MONSTER cable, me & my mates couldn't see any difference at all but if your into looking at the back of your TV & want to see a fancy looking wire then by all means buy it.

I've actually cleared out all my DVD's I had so many, over 500 but I gave them to my dad & some to my friends. Now I only buy Blueray but only films I really like & will want to watch over. I don't normally buy them straight away now either, it doesn't take long for films to get reduced now days.

I got rid of alot of DVD's in a garage sale. Sold them for $2 to $3 a piece. I just kept a few DVD's that were my favorites. With Blu-ray, I just buy the new releases except for a few older movies. I don't buy anything and everything anymore. I make sure that the movie is worth watching over and over again before it enters my collection.

Unless it's a movie you will watch over and over, I'd just hang onto the DVD. I only buy Blu-rays now and will replace a DVD if it's something I would watch a lot or if I can get it for a good price.

Same here, I've replaced "key films" that I love and will watch over and over, but other ones that are on a lower rotation... or not that visually stunning (like Krull) will remain in the collection as DVDs :lol

And yes, I own and love Krull :rock

i'd wait it out. they'll probably be an even better format within 5 years with higher resolution.

I think I am almost a 100% sure this will happen,
so what is everyone going to do? sell the blu rays at half price you got them and re buy everything?
this makes me kinda sick sometimes, I do not have a 350 dvd collection, my collection is smaller,
but, I don't know if I want to throw everything away and spend more money on the same movies, I might do it for a couple, but,
sometimes I think, what's the point? what's the point of buying any movies at all, they keep changing formats and then they get mad when people download movies on the net, I still buy dvd's sometimes, but

the big question I have is, How much life does DVDs really have? how long until dvds become the new VHS tapes??:dunno

Most people waist money upgrading because they seem to think they have too. They pay for the newest and coolest stuff all the time, then the better stuff comes out. They then sell the other stuff they bought for almot nothng compared to what they paid and upgrade, they play along in all the BS, "buy our product (blu rays) because they are a little better then dvd" ,most blu rays are only slightly betrer then dvd (comedies, dramas). "Then when you do that with you entire collection we will change the format and you can spend a fortune upgrading again".

I still by dvd's all the time. The Blu rays l buy are only my favorite movies and ones l will watch alot more then once. There is no reason to replace every dvd with the Blu ray. I have bought a few blu rays to replace my dvd versons like Carlito's Way, Thomas Crown Affair, Donnie Brasco ect and there is very iittle difference, a little sharper, but not woth the $10-$15 unless they're your absolute favorites.

I mean, I don't mean to sound like a hater,
but I don't own any Blu rays because I don't feel the need to, I think the next big thing will be digital downloads, I think owning Disks (whether is DVD or Blu ray either way) will become obsolete, I think putting a disk in your disk player and press play will become obsolete,
it happened with music, I could see the same with movies, Netflix is really pushing it that way as well,
I mean, is even more convenient, owning 300 movies in disks taking so much space, or having the same 300 movies in a hard drive, I Love owning my dvd disks, but I could see that becoming the future,

For me, Blu is the way to go at the moment. I'm replacing old favorites and usually pick up new stuff on Blu. (Especially if it's a movie with flashy visuals and sound.)

But, yeah, the next great format is the digital download and it's coming way faster than some customers would want.

Though a fair number of folks are pretty comfortable with that. I think it's kind of a generational thing. Folks who are a little younger really don't want to own a ton of physical discs. They're perfectly comfortable with downloads. Me, I'm an old fogey and like having the physical item on my shelf!

The other thing about digital downloads is that the industry desperately wants us all to abandon discs completely and pay for downloads ASAP. Because that's a lot less overhead for them. Sure, the server farms they need for that are costly, but it's a lot cheaper than producing, transporting and selling physical items.

I work for a "major premium cable channel" and I'm telling you, they're salivating for the day they can cut out all the middle men (like retailers and distributors) so that everybody can just click a button to send them money directly for a download. There's nothing they'd like more than to cut out the stores, rental kiosks, DVD printing houses and cable operators from eating into those profits.

Honestly, it depends on big your TV is or if you ever desire to have a home theatre. Mine home theatre screen is 110" and you can definitely tell the difference between DVD and Blu Ray. Even with an very expensive Blu Ray player, scaled DVDs still do not measure up. But for most, if you don't desire a home theatre, I think DVD would be fine for the most part. Perhaps you would be happy with digital downloads, but for now, the resolution is just not there for the bigger screens.

Yell yeah if you have a massive screen like that, but 99% of people don't, so no need for them going out and replacing all their dvds for only slightly better version.

I also hate the digital dowload idea, that is stupid. I want the discs/movies on my shelf.

but there's where my annoyance with blu ray comes, Like I said, there really is no point in getting Blu rays, unless you can spend on replacing them over and over

I was just going to post the same thing. I have 73" TV and just upgraded to a 92" TV. There is a huge difference between an up-scaled DVD and a Blu Ray disk. I can even notice it on my parents 46" TV. Also if you have a good audio set up, the sound difference is very noticeable as well.

As for digital downloads, I want to have HD audio and video like a Blu Ray which would be around 30 GB per movie. I am capped by Comcast at 250 GB a month so until the infrastructure is there to allow more/unlimited usage for around the same price structure that would suck as well.

I have a 400 disk Blu Ray player for a reason and that is filling up quickly!

those people that can't see the difference in an up-scaled dvd and a blu ray either need to have their eyes checked....or they need to get a good tv....don't know why this is so hard to comprehend....

not for a long time imo....with the vid quality and sound quality you get from a blu ray that's close to 30gig in storage....no sort of service is going to stream 30 gig worth of a movie....they'll do what cable companies do on some HD broadcasts and compress it.
