We are discussing this on the BD forum. I really would not rely on these screencaps. I'll wait to see the movie myself before passing judgment.

Seeing the blu-ray in motion is not going to take away the horrible digital manipulations. Paramount messed up, there really isn't anything more to it. Edge-enhancement, over-the-top noise reduction etc. - it's all there.

This is how Paramount describes its Sapphire series:

“the Sapphire Series will deliver the best pictures in the best picture.”

“...It’s wonderful that Paramount is taking the time to produce exceptional Blu-ray presentations of these classic films,”

Gladiator should not have been released looking like this.

Braveheart however looks stunning.

Can someone please tell me what I'm supposed to be seeing that's bad other than the arrow segment missing? Everything else looks nice and sharp. Even compared to the HDTV broadcast pics from that dvdbeaver link above it's clear that this looks great and better than any other version.

Yeah, after looking at the screenshots, it looks pretty good. I'll wait till more reviews come out before deciding if it's worthy of a purchase or not.

I know one is day and one is night but...

Your right one is night and internal where the other is daylight and external and not a fair comparison. Also the colour tones of both films couldn't be any more different. Braveheart which was shot in Scotland and Ireland has a very green and bright tone whereas Gladiator which was shot in I think Malta and Tunesia has much warmer tone.

But if you base your decision on whether to buy this movi on screenshots then look at the review I posted above. They look perfectly fine to me.

These films were most likely shot in 35mm stock which is much better than 1080p. It's the transfer that makes all the difference to these discs.

Doesn't matter if it was shot in HD or not...

Blade Runner, for example. Amazing on Blu. No HD technology back in '82 ;)

35mm is greater than 1080p so its not even an issue. The technology to transfer 32mm to a TV screen for the general public does not exist at present apart from cinema screens.

Today's the day .... well for Braveheart anyway.

Best Buy has it for $22, and $10 off when you buy Gladiator and Braveheart together. :angelsmil

This is a shame. Gladiator is one of my favorite films. I will wait until they re-release it with a better transfer.

Don't hold your breath this is the Sapphire Series, it is supposed to be as good as it gets.

Did you buy it dude? What's your opinion?

$10 back on Gladiator and Braveheart when you currently have the DVD, only purchased Braveheart.

Wal-Mart has Braveheart for $22, so I'm gonna pick it up today and definitely decided to skip Gladiator, based on the stills I've seen. My DVD version looks almost as good, so I'm not going to waste my money with an upgrade I can barely see.
