They were probably expecting Skull Island to be a better seque so that the wait wouldn't have felt so long. Either way it does sound like they waited too long.

I doubt the long wait had much effect. The bigger problem was that a lot of people didn't like Godzilla 2014. It had a massive opening weekend, followed by a huge second week drop, which often happens when a movie has so-so or outright bad word of mouth. Consequently, way less people were interested in seeing the follow-up.

Exact same thing happened with Justice League, btw. Batman v. Superman opened to huge, record numbers, followed by a huge, record Week 2 drop due to bad word of mouth. Then the sequel unsurprisingly had a much lower opening because a bunch of people had no desire to see where that story was going.

I always loved this shot -- look at the massive size of that model airport!!! Man, how fun would it be to run around on that set?

I finally retired from formum photoshopping lol but hey now I’m curious if JAWS watched Alita and if so which does he prefer Alita or KOTM and that goes for Maulfan and Biojex as well.

Not yet..

Doubt it.

I may think its a better movie but I don't see it giving chills like this one did :)

I asked my kids if they wanted to watch this with me and they were not interested. My son told me that nobody has talked about this movie before or after release at school (Endgame is still the topic). I walk into Toys R Us (yes we still have them here folks but its no big deal no NECA stuff anyway) or Walmart and not a “sniff” of GODZILLA toys. So let me see…they havn’t marketed this movie to the kids to get their parents (including woman) to take them and sell tickets. Did not flood the toy shelves to market the movie. So what do you have left?? Men. And most men in their 30’s to 50’s (like me).

If this is the third movie in the “Monster Universe” someone show me toys from 2014 and Skull Island to generate ticket sales for this movie. Due to these reasons I have always seen this monster universe as a “niche” movie. I’m not sure how they expected to make money when it wasn’t even marketed!!

They shouldn’t of waited 5 yrs to do a sequel. A huge reason why avatar 2 won’t do as well as the original

No movie but Endgame has done as well as the first Avatar. You'd be a fool to think the sequel will do as good or better at the boxoffice.

It was also hard to imagine back in the day that the movie that James Cameron did after Titanic would do even better. So while I don't think it will happen, it doesn't mean it can't.

And Kong made more money than godzilla did. The other problem is there is a large number of people that have no idea Godzilla and Kong are connected to each other. A monster movie fan I work with just found out today that Kong skull island was part of the godzilla universe so the other problem is even if people thought Kong was great, there's no anticipation for Godzilla from Kong simply because it felt like it's own thing. Which isn't a terrible thing but if you are hoping to bridge the gap between two movies with a different movie maybe they could have done a better job at connecting the movies outside of Monarch? I actually think Godzilla Vs Kong probably should have been in this movies slot and do King of the monsters last.

I think Godzilla Vs Kong will do much bigger business but this does put a damper on the next film considering this one wasn't that well received and Adam Wingard isn't really known for great characters so I don't think GvK will fix the issues people had with this film.

Heading to catch this at the local Dolby Cinema in less than an hour. :yess:

Have you not seen it? I saw it twice, personally I loved it. The moment when the classic theme plays gives me goose bumps.

Eh Zilla 14, skull island , Kotm, and Kong vs zilla is more than enough to complete the series for me. No need to go more than that. Some of the best directors throwing down the best they got, no need to milk it dry beyond that. Really not that much depth to monsters anyway. They’ll reboot them individually with enough time in between when everyone’s finally over the “shared universe”. And they’ll be saying “ back to the basics woohoo!” And we’ll all bite.

I hope you stay up all night just to find out he is posting in the Endgame thread and then announces he wont post thoughts until tomorrow.

:lol

I understood that reference. :lol

Fun movie! I thought the pacing was a bit uneven and a lot of it was outright silly (subs outrunning nuclear blasts, etc.) but it seemed that anytime I there was a lull something so insanely cool would happen that it'd put a huge old grin on my face all over again.

I have to say I enjoyed it and my kids did too. I absolutely loved all four of the main monsters and they really took me back to when I first saw them as a kid.
