The 90's are when attention spans started to get shallow. It makes sense that naming things after the sounds they made was acceptable. I'm surprised it doesn't have an -y after it, just to enhance the markedly juvenile character of the appellation.
Since science fiction in the 70's was a child of the space program, it makes sense that even in a fantasy story, things would be named according to what they are. That would be the rational taxonomical approach.
