So far, nothing about this has said "terrible" to me. The creator of Rome is behind the whole thing and DC seems like they're giving them a full roster of characters to use.

I already don't like the idea that the Riddler, Penguin, Catwoman, and Joker will exist before Batman does. Jim Gordon VS the Riddler may as well be any generic cop Vs any computer criminal when theres no chance of Batman showing up. If you change Sam Waterson's name on Law and Order to Harvey Dent, does it make the show something I haven't seen for 300 episodes already?

They never said they do, they just said that the show will follow some of their journeys, as well as the journey of Bruce Wayne from twelve year old orphan to caped vigilante in the final episode. The only things I've heard that I'm skeptical of are that 1.) the dude who directed Stallone's Judge Dredd is directing the pilot and 2.) the idea of The Joker having a backstory. There's a lot of potential to screw this up, but there's a lot of potential to make a hard hitting crime drama with some of the most iconic characters of the twentieth century, as well.

If the Joker and Riddler have backstories and are facing Gordon than they are indeed saying that they exist before Batman since it's confirmed Bruce won't be Batman until the final episode of the show.

I think you and I have different ideas of "back stories." Of course The Penguin and Joker existed before Batman. Not as The Joker and Penguin, though, but as Oswald Cobblepot and [unknown] (thus my apprehension about giving the latter a backstory). My point is that just because Oswald Cobblepot and Selina Kyle are in the show, that doesn't necessarily mean that it's going to end with them picking up umbrellas and whips.

Yea no, I get that. Like in Origins you meet Nigma and he doesn't refer to himself as The Riddler, and he's already been a cop for a while. I can see it kind of working with certain characters, Cobblepott as a known arms dealer is fine since he's much older and has family roots in Gotham.

I don't know that I would be able to care about a Red Hood origin knowing it'll never lead to fully developed Joker or Batman. My biggest problem is believing it'll be anything more than a CSI with name recognition. I also have doubts the actors cast will be worthy of playing a part like The Penguin let alone Joker.

SHIELD being complete trash doesn't help either.

All the more reason for them to make it good to start with. Cut out filler and fluff episodes. Nobody likes them. Sure it makes for easier reruns to have a case of the week type of episode, but I think audiences expect more of a serial type of series like Walking Dead or 24 where the story is constantly progressing.

It looks like a certain infamous kingpin (no, not The Kingpin - that's Marvel!) could be Jim Gordon's first noteworthy adversary in FOX's upcoming Gotham series.

According to a tweet from Latino Review's El Mayimbe, Oswald Cobblepot -- the Penguin himself -- may be first of Batman's Rogues Gallery to appear in the origin series, which focuses both on Gordon beginning his career with the GCPD and a kid named Bruce Wayne.

Interesting choice. This is VERY pre-Batman then. Not really sure I like the idea of Bruce being a kid and yet his villains are already running a muck in Gotham. Would seem to make them kind of old when Batman finally shows up.
