New Animated Green Lantern To Change The Mythology
Prepare yourselves, for you might not be able to handle this. Those with weak disposition should probably stop reading now, because with the upcoming Green Lantern: First Flight animated feature massive changes are coming. This in an alteration to the character that I, for one, am shocked that anyone could even consider. Though given writer Alan Burnett’s pedigree (SuperFriends, Batman, Superman, Static Shock, Batman Beyond and The Batman. Seriously, the guy’s been writing DC cartoons since ^^^^ing SuperFriends.), I’m willing to see where he’s going with this.
“I knew the development people over here at Warner Brothers were looking for a take on Green Lantern, and they were having difficulty coming up with one,” Burnett said in a recent interview. “I was driving my car, just thinking about it, when suddenly an idea occurred to me, and I called them up and said, ‘Have you ever tried this?’ They said, ‘No. Go with that.’ And that’s how it got into it.”
And what would that idea be?
“What I did in the script was just anchor the Green Lanterns into a police force and think of their sectors as precincts.”
The Green Lanterns as a police force?!? Their sectors as precincts?!? Are you ^^^^ing kidding me? That’s not a change, that’s the Storytelling Engine. That’s what the Green Lantern Corps is. They’re Space Cops, Burnett, that’s what they are. How in the name of Alan Moore’s Beard didn’t you get that?
Gah, I need to calm down, think positive thoughts. Since they’re making police comparisons and the plot does involve rookie Hal Jordan being partnered with Sinestro (who is also shown in his Yellow Lantern uniform in the trailer), this could be that Training Day-inspired take on a Green Lantern: Year One-type story I’ve always thought would work. Even though it’s a movie about Hal, it also focuses heavily on alien Green Lanterns. I really dig the costume and character designs. And Ch’p is in it, so my DVD is already bought.
