How can you suspend a kid for wearing a shirt or bandana with an American flag who lives in America? That's ridiculous, imo.

Don't suspend them for wearing American bandannas and tshirts. Suspend them for instigating a fight with other students.

I'm sorry, but if live in the U.S., you have no right to say that a fellow classmate simply wearing a U.S. flag is trying to instigate anything. If the flag offends some people too much, they are welcome to live elsewhere.

So you suspend the person exercising their freedom of speech instead of the person that wants to fight over it?

I wonder if a Mexican kid in Mexico wore a shirt with a Mexican flag on July 4th during a celebration in Mexico whether there'd be hullaballoo at schools like this. Proof that we have gone way too PC in this country.

Did they say racial slurs against these students? Did they tell them to go back to Mexico? If a US citizen gets that offended at someone wearing clothing with the US flag on it, well then I am at a loss for words.

Personally, I doubt the kids probably had a problem with it until the teachers made a big deal out of it. Then they probably realized - hey we should be offended.

This is an example of something that should have been a non-issue getting way overblown.

Kids don't have Freedom of Speech in schools. Let's be completely honest the Bill of Rights stops at the door for kids K-12. If you look at policies and procedures at 99% of the schools in the US that is the case. I always laugh when my kids say they were just exercising freedom of speech in a class by telling the teacher to ____ off and then they got suspended for it.

I truly understand what your saying....
But you know these kids were decked out in all the american flag gear for a reason. Take away the politics from this situation and what you have is another case of snot nose punks trying to cause trouble for their teachers just for the hell of it.

I bet you are right. One thing that really bothers me is teachers trying to impose their ideological beliefs on students--whatever they are. Yet it seems to happen far too often.

Even if that is the case. Being a tool isn't justification for making a kid leave school. Hell, kids used to wear KORN t-shirts all the time when I was younger. I wanted to punch each of them in the face, but part of civilized culture means that you have to live and let live.

If I understand the news reports, its all over here by the way, they were chanting USA over and over during the Lunch activities which featured authentic Mexican dancers and a couple of teachers took them to the office where the principal suspended them. Unless they left something out that was the chain of events that was reported.

I understand where your coming from. I retract the freedom of speech comment and ask again.

So the student wearing a tshirt is worse than a student that wants to fight over the tshirt?

Violence trumps even from a school admin standpoint. If you look at the referrals in my district, the shirt at best could have gotten disruptions and the kids given detention. If a kid got violent or even threatened violence, that kid would have been suspended without a doubt. Honestly the principal was making a political move and showing by saying that it was disrespectful and throwing the books at the kids because it looked good especially on Cinco de Mayo and they could use the guise of intolerance. School systems especially at the Admin level are all politics and with the district turning their back on this principal it'll blow up in his face.

really? we're not supposed to celebrate the diversity that makes up our country? because honestly if you are not native american then you need to get out.......

Oh here we go....:lol

Yes, but certain behavior should not be tolerated. This is the problem with society. These kids will grow up feeling protected by their parents, and become adults that disregard sensitivity to others and common sense because they know what they can get away with. Maybe a suspension or a swift kick in the butt would teach them a lesson about being smartasses.

To be honest I am just an impartial observer, and I am neither offended or appalled by the situation. Hell I am only 24 and still a youth myself. In the end, these kids will get away with it...Congratz if this is what the youth believe their grandparents thought for...I myself have allot more respect.

I agree with what you're saying, but this is where you "be the better person" and walk away. I want to slap every "Emo" or "Frat" kid that I see in the mall....do I do it?? No.

I think schools should try to find ways to keep the kids in school instead of using any way to kick them out. Do they not do in-school suspension anymore??
