Actually one flashback scene of pre-rebellion events was allready filmed.

It was the scene of
Ned Stark's father and older brother being cruelly killed by the Mad King before the eyes of the whole court.
.

You can see a glimpse of that scene in one of the promotional trailers for season 1.

Unfortunately the whole idea of flashbacks was scrapped due to time and production restraints. Which is a pity couse it was the perfect storytelling tool for the creators. The TV show misses a LOT of context for events and characters due to the lack of any explanation of passed history of Westeros. GOT is a great show, but the constant productional restrains keep it from utilising the whole potential of the novels and make it seem crude in narration compared to other HBO masterpieces.

Yeah, it takes away from the feel of the story being told. This story is so deep and not showing or delving into the past prevents people who don't read from getting a full understanding of the characters and the families. They think Vicerys is just upset for no reason and that Robert is just a fat, drunk, slob. Some people think what happened to Catelyn was completely undeserved, but truthfully she was just as spiteful as anyone else. I love this story.

The other problem is that the further we are getting along the story, the harder it will be for the showrunners to introduce all those "old" characters and events.

Becouse how are they now supposed to explain to show watchers who the hell Rhaegar was? Now that we are moving into the 4th season?

Sure, they will probably install some effective exposition scene that will explain his story and build him up. It might be servicable and informative, but it will never have the narrative "weight" that the character had in the novels, where he was mentioned right from the very beggining like a larger than life, almost mythical person, viewed through the eyes of many diffrent characters, often with conflicting oppinions of him. Especially since - like so many things that happened during and before Robert's rebellion - Rhaegar and the events around him were connected to all the important storyline threads in GOT. You could say that he and his death were the fulcrum on which the entire political intrigue of GOT was based on.

And most people who only watch the show don't even know who he is. And we are entering 4th season. Introducing him now will be crude and forced, like dropping a bomb in the middle of the narrative -
"oh, right, by the way - we totally forgot to explain it: Daenerys had another brother. He was kind of a big deal. Ok. Back to the show".

And its not just Rhaegar. Many things, events, characters and plot points of the story were part of the novels from Book 1, being mentioned here and there, building the world of Westeros, the historical background that was giving context to all that happened later and made it more dramatic. In the show those things are just crudely "dropped" on the viewers (if they are mentioned at all) in later seasons. But I guess thats the price to pay when the subject matter requires such gargantuan production effort, to make every single episode. The end result is still great.

I don't know about Robert. When he is sitting down and talking with Cercei, he opens his heart and talks about how even ruling the 7 kingdoms couldn't fill the gap that loosing Ned's sister left him with. You do get the feeling that he has been drowning his sorrows for years with alcohol, food and sex.

What a great scene that was.

I've never read the books and I've always thought of Robert as a glorious warrior who for the most part just stopped caring after he lost the only thing that gave his life meaning - Eddard's sister.

Damascus is carbon steel. It will need either regular oiling or a coat of [ame="https://www.amazon.com/Renaissance-RW2-Wax-Polish/dp/B003AJWN62/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381839942&sr=8-1&keywords=renaissance+wax"]renaissance wax[/ame] once or twice a year in order to prevent it from rusting. You'll want some [ame="https://www.amazon.com/United-Cutlery-UC2723-Metal-Polishing/dp/B000F6UC98/ref=pd_sbs_hg_21"]Polishing Paste[/ame] in the event you do come across some rust in order to get it off.

With a carbon blade you do not want to be liberally touching the blade as your hands will leave oil on it which will oxidize. Handle with gloves or wipe the blade with a cloth.

The regular is stainless steel and has little chance of rusting. The stainless looses the "Damascus Steel" pattern that "Valyrian Steel" is based on.

You can trust the Damascus version to go for 2k shortly after it sells out. The ES of 500 and the show is gaining more and more popularity.

Yup. Especially show Longclaw. This isn't like statues. This is 1 of 500 of the sword of freaking Jon Snow. Everyone's favorite TV show character. He says $2000, I say $4000 easy. I think you just helped me talking myself into getting it.
