Well, thanks to Darth Loki telling me about this item I went out and bought it today. I have not seen HD DVD in action yet, but the player came with PJ's King Kong and I also picked up Superman Returns and Apollo 13 on HD DVD as well.

It's my Christmas present to myself this year since my now ex fiance is moving out on Monday!

Does anyone else have it? Like it? Is HD DVD really THAT much better than standard DVD's?

ex fiance moving out, that sucks bro. from what I hear, hd-dvds are amazing and they are THAT much better than normal dvds. just make sure that the tv you are using is a pretty good quality HDTV and you should be amazed. Let me know how it works, i'm still debating spending the $200 for this, or saving a little and spending $600 for the PS3.

Trust me, ex fiance moving out does NOT suck. I gave her the boot.

I thought about the PS3 as well for blue ray, but my TV is 1080i and you need 1080p for blue ray I believe and I am not buying another TV for some time.

Loki seems pretty happy with the 360 HD DVD set up so I am sure I will be too. I will post a report on it once I get to hook it up this weekend.

It is now difficult to watch standard dvds. HD DVD is so much crisper and you can notice little details that you may have missed while watching a dvd.

Sorry to hear about the Ex fiance thing or am I? Might it be a good thing? Good luck.

Oh, well in that case good riddance. Chicks has dampen your style. Anyway, I hadn't heard that BlueRay is only 1080p. That's odd. I hope not, because my TV is also 1080i and I dont' want to spend an extra $200 if I don't have to.

I don't know but this morning I had pancakes for breakfast topped with Aunt Jemima syrup accompanied with a cold glass of milk.

That's odd, I have the SAME breakfast.

I like mine it looks better for sure. My TV can handle up to 1080i and it looks great well worth $200 since the DVD player I had with upconversion was a POS and would do this random pause thing all the time.

As for as the PS3 only doing 1080p I highly doubt that it says up to 1080p which would include 1080i 720p 480p. From what I understand there is only a small difference between 10801 and 1080p. They both offer the same resolution just display it in a different manner i being interlaced or p being progressive scan. Interlaced will draw the half the picture then the other half in alternating lines where progressive is the whole picture displayed in one scan top to bottom. But since all modern TV's can not display a interlaced image they convert it to a progressive scan image (1080i is esentially converted to 1080p) the only exception to this are CRTs. Unless you have a huge TV say over 50 inches you more then likely will not see the difference between a 1080p signal and 1080i signal sent to the TV. Most people can't tell the difference between 1080i and 720p on TVs less then 50 inches, I can't really on mine and its 50".

Hope this helps.

Basicly if you want the very best get a 1080p TV and a PS3 unless you have a really big TV you most likely will not even see the difference between 1080i and 1080p signals.

Well, I have a 64" HDTV (one of the big beasts) and a 26" LCD. Would I really notice the difference on either of these whether it be 1080p or 1080i ?

I would seriouly doubt you could tell mcuh if any difference bewteen 720p and 1080i/p on the 26" LCD. The 64" it depends, you might see a difference but not a big difference. The resolution is the same but you might see a slight difference. Now with that said you 64" tv is most likely a 720p TV and not a 1080 TV. It might be able to take a 1080i signal but its converting it to a 720p signal. If you look at the resolution its most likely 1280 x 720 and not 1920 x 1080

Definately stick with HD-DVD, it's better, and cheaper (for the most part) if I get the money I'll go ahead with it. And also, I can see the difference with HD-DVD on my 17" LCD monitor compared with regular DVD, because regular dvd is 720x480 and HD-DVD is 1920x1080 and it is actually larger than the screen so it looks amazing, I'm hoping that I can get a larger monitor and get an Xbox 360 with the HD-DVD addon and put it through my PC, it'll be great.

I could be wrong, but here's what I understand things to be: I have a 50" plasma, and according to someone I talked to (note, not necessarily the authority), there's no such thing as a 1080i picture on a plasma, since there's no interlacing going on. So, basically for a plasma, a 1080i signal should show up the same as if it were 1080p. So, whether I pump a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD signal in 1080i, on my plasma, it'll look like it was a 1080p. Any one care to agree on this? So, for me, I hsould have no problems showing a BD or HD movie using HDMI to my plasma. . . . I think.

What's the native resolution of the display?

Native 1280 x 720 displays can produce 1080i but they can't fake 1080p. It either has a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 or it doesn't.

But if you have a 50" plasma with an HDMI connection, you are going to get a darn good picture no matter what.

i think you are asking if you will be able to tell a difference b/n dvd and hd dvd on these t.v.'s. i think you will.

You are correct you can not display 1080i on any modern TV with the exception of a CRT TV. Most TVs that support up to 1080i signal have a resolution of 1280x720 will have a simulated 1080p picture. I have never seen a display that has 1920x1080 resolution did not support 1080p signals. Either way 1080 or 720 it going to be better then a standard dvd even if upconverted.

Kit,

Sorry I talked you into another purchase :monkey3 . I hope you like it as much as I do. I have Superman Returns coming from Netflix tommorow in HD so I can't wait to watch that. I may wait til Thursday to watch it since I'll be getting my receiver so I can hook up surround to it though.

I picked this up a couple days ago as well. I haven't taken it out of the box yet though. I wanted my first HD DVD experience to be LotR.

Does anyone know a release date for the LOTR HD extended edition set?
