The hot and humid Summers here in the Southeast is one of the major reasons I am seriously considering relocation for the first time in my adult life.

I HATE IT. Absolutely oppressive. :monkey4

update, i don't know whether to laugh or cry. the owner never showed. so at 10:30pm last night there's a knock on the door and the guy that originally put in the equipment came back and said the owner wanted him to come there and make a showing. after the owner had a first appointment with my uncle, then changed it to 10am, 1pm, 4pm and then never showed he sends the guy that's not sure what he's doing back. my uncle didn't let him in. can you imagine, 10:30pm at night??? this is getting weird and scary. :google

update, and the saga continues. the owner comes out at almost 8pm when the temperature outside is way cooler than afternoon, looks at the unit first before knocking on the door. comes in, turns on the ac, and the unit starts working, cooling down to 75 before it shuts off. says there's nothing wrong and tries to make us look like we're insane. leaves, and two hours later the unit does the same thing. my uncle has called another company and they are coming on wednesday. we suspect the owner of the scam company did something to make the unit cool temporarily, perhaps added some freon. lasted a couple of hours and then the same symptoms. today wasn't so hot because it was overcast. i am very interested to see where this story is going to lead. :google :google it's like living some cheap b movie plot.

Your uncle should challenge the charge for the repairs with his card company. Sounds like they truly don't know what they're doing.

he will attempt it but he's been told that since the company actually installed new equipment, that's what he paid for. the fact that the problem was not diagnosed correctly can probably only be settled in small claims court. today a new company comes out to try and fix it. i'll bet dimes to dollars that it's something really simple and inexpensive, that is if you can get an ac company to be honest about it.

the new company came yesterday and the problem is a bad switch in the compressor. the guy said since the switch is inside, the entire compressor would need to be replaced. somewhere around $500. they are coming today, first appointement. to quote azrael from dogma, "No pleasure, no rapture, no exquisite sin greater than central air." :balrog

Thank goodness we don't get that kind of BS here as often! Only time I suffered from horrible service (from what I could recall), was with my old LCS, which is now out of business. Too bad. So sad. :D

Anytime you give a company business they should be floored and treat you like gold so they get your return business. I never understood why companies would f-over a person(s) like that, on the simple fact you could have repeat business dealings through them. Lots of people think in the now, and sometimes often live in the past, instead of having the foresight to see what the future could possible bring. The possibilities being endless.

Could you report this guy to the BBB (Better Business Bureau) or will that even do anything you think? With the amount of money invested... this was quite the costly venture at your uncle's expense. Perhaps it would be in your uncle's best interest to go to small claim's court as was suggested. Either the guy flat out tried to screw you or had no clue what he's doing. In any case, this individual should have his business license stricken away from him, so there aren't any other future mishaps with other people.

Edit: Oh yes I also had horror stories to tell when dealing with Best Buy. Best Buy my ass! Definitely not Best for Service.

Does this mean don't bother buying any appliances from them?

LOL No to anything! I don't care how good the deals are there, which are far and few between. And if something looks like a good deal, I am sure if you look elsewhere there is better deals going on said item(s). Their business etiquette sucks!

he is planning to speak to a lawyer. the guy has a full page phonebook ad with no address and lied what his real name was. i did a people search reverse phone lookup from a number on his refridge magnet and found his real name and address. i hope he has to pay it all back! but the good news is the new company installed a new compressor and it seems to be working! please cross your fingers! we'll know when it stops raining and the sun comes out to bake the earth. i really can't remember florida being so hot but right now it's 74 in here. ahhhhh.

update, it seems no one can fix the problem from 3 different companies. destined to sweat, i guess. most people would pay alot more than $4000 to have a sauna installed in their house. :monkey2

yet another ac guy coming out today. lord help us all! something causes the compressor to overheat and shut off. anyone with ac experience have any suggestions as to why?

did they flush out the system? some times over the winter sediment builds up in the pipes and causes the compressor to overheat. it then shuts down so it doesnt do permanent damage. im sure they tried this but you never know. i used to work on a pretty sophisticated hvac unit at my hotel and this happened all the time. we had code lights and they would blink to let you know what is wrong. i dont know if your system is self diagnostic but if it is try to look for a blinking light. that will help you interpret the code using the owners manual.

thank you devlinboy for the info. we were told that there was not enough freon in the system. they put some in and all finally seems to be working right. however it has been raining here so the temp is about 80 outside. we'll know if it worked when the hot sun starts beating down. it's just a home system so nothing sophisticated.

the final update..hopefully.

ok, probably the tenth guy out here to look at why the compressor would turn on and turn off randomly. finally somebody had the sense to call the manufacturer and they claimed it to be a common problem. they installed in the outside unit a small black cylinder to 'hard start' the compressor when the unit kicks on. doesn't work. installs a different one. doesn't work. then....

like a miracle, this guy decides to change a silver cylinder even though he claimed the readings were acceptable and VOILA! the compressor kicked on instantly and the unit has worked right ever since 4pm. so it seems the problem was this silver cylinder causing the compressor to heat up and shut off.

so ends the saga of the 28 day service call. the end?
