Thought I would ask here since this and Obi-Wan will in all likelihood be the next Star Wars figures that take batteries.

How do our collector friends over in Australia plan to deal with the battery law that’s just gone into effect?

Directed to @ObiGlennKenobi and @choombaz but I know there are others from there around. Seems like an enormous hit to the collecting community.

Popcultcha is saying they won’t ship figures with button cell batteries within Australia and I’ve heard Sideshow is already cancelling orders for those products there.

You folks already deal with a lot being collectors in Australia but this seems like an unprecedented crisis.
From what I heard is as long as the packaging is child proof and has written warnings and safety information. If the battery is part of the sold product, the battery casing/compartment on the product must be secured with a screw.

Haven't heard anything on how this will affect 1/6 collectibles in Australia. I guess for Hot Toys SW figures the button batteries are already encased separately with two layer of clear plastic, inside the actual box/packaging (altho idk if its up to the standard) but I know for sure the light up lightsaber arms and vader belt boxes for example, all have screws on the battery compartment.

If this became a problem for some 1/6 figures, well maybe we can ask the seller to throw away the batteries before shipping the figure? I'm sure something can be arranged.

Seems like ordering from Hong Kong or China would circumvent the issue, and probably not cost any more. (Doing so from the UK is usually cheaper than ordering locally).

There’s already an effect since orders are being cancelled unfortunately.

Popcultcha has said removing the batteries from the packaging doesn’t make it compliant because the compartment itself isn’t; just having a screw isn’t enough. They said they will look into potentially modifying the figures to be.

That is true, and some of the HK sellers have said they would remove the batteries and ship the figures, and it’s unlikely customs would be able to find the compartments in the unlikely event a figure gets inspected.

Still not zero risk, but likely one of the few options available for the foreseeable future. I don’t like to buy from HK myself so I would be devastated if I were in Australia. I know OGK loves buying from Popcultcha.

Yes it is very frustrating, I’m in two minds over the whole thing, those batteries are lethal but jez this seems pretty draconian. Only just found out about it but the govt have been working with retailers over the past year for transition. Popcultcha is the only place taking forward steps with the issue that I’ve seen and I’m canceling any orders i have there that take batteries as they have said they cannot guarantee that when the figures eventually show up (and we all know they get them after literally everybody else) they will be able to sell them anyway and may have to send them back to HK if they aren’t compliant. I’ve emailed a couple of other local retailers for their thoughts but I’m guessing they won’t be as strict as Popcultcha because they are smaller and they parallel import rather than go through Ikon, but i have no idea if this means they can get around it or not.

Last resort is i stick with HK sellers. The rulings make no mention at all re importing. All it talks about local retailers.

The 1/4 Mando is almost half price on PC atm only to international customers because of this.

Not Australian but the Australian Government seem like a bunch of wet wipes at times, they seem to treat the people like inept children rather than adults capable of thinking for themselves; wasn't video game censorship a big problem until recently iirc?

These are collectibles for adults, they aren't for children. The batteries should be banned on a case by case basis, they should be fine in collectibles such as this. If any collectors have small children it's their responsiblity to keep them safe and these batteries out of reach.

Hmmmm this will be an issue for Mando Luke then...I have my PO placed with PC. Gotta contact them tomorrow.

It seems like this caught the collecting community over there off guard as it was being enacted on the 22nd.

I heard Sugo will be one of the ones just removing batteries and shipping as normal.

What a tremendous headache for collectors and retailers. Really sorry to hear about all this.

Well thanks for bringing this to my attention @MyenShi ...so I can take some action.

No problem. As soon as I heard about it I thought of all the nice Australian collectors on this forum and how insane it is to just have this blow up for both collectors and retailers.

Best of luck. At the very least, where money is involved people try to find solutions eventually.

That’s good to know. I just bought the Rescue figure from them. You can’t get it from PC anymore unless you live overseas! Crazy times.

I think what’s so insane for me and my fellow collectors down under is how this went under the radar for 18 months. The law covers too much of the field imo, Popcultcha has Prime 1 statues like Kratos and Artreus listed as International Sales only! It just seems so insane that we went from 36 hours ago where no one knew this was a problem to what we’re facing now. I think the other piece of the law that’s bad for us is the requirement of inspections of safety standards being met. Good luck getting Howard Chan to agree to that.

There’s just so many unknowns as well. How will damage policy work if HK retailers are going into the box to get the batteries out? Is it the compartments themselves as well as Popcultcha has seemingly implied that are a problem? If so, does removing the batteries do anything? How is it going to be policed? Now every figure and statue put up for preorder I will watch with bated breath hoping it doesn’t include light up functions. Hopefully, this is actually just a blip in the road.

Thank you for your kind words though, @MyenShi! :)

Needs Wheezing sound feature

would go ape s*** if HT did some kind of effect led with this option
Don't know about that, but certainly their sculpt is going to look much different without that red, blue and purple lighting...

Thanks here also! I has Snowspeeder Luke on order with popcultcha and called them today to check, ultimately they're not sure if they'll have a workaround and said the order may be cancelled so I opted to anyway and just ordered one from Toys wonderland with some discounts I had.

It’s great news for non-Aussie collectors though, the prices of the instock light up figures are ridiculously good. 1/4 Mando, Rescue etc

I called PC and they said they are unable to make a decision if they could fulfill my Mando Luke HT order until they see the item in hand to check for compliance.

I am not going to take that gamble and have to pay for the figure at double the price at release if I had to look somewhere else.

So I have cancelled my PO for Mando Luke and placed new PO with KGH.

Thanks again @MyenShi for this critical info.

Like choombaz said, crazy times.

I don’t think I’ve ever see something of this magnitude affect an entire collecting community before.

Really seemed to have blindsided so many people. I’m glad I could give a heads up but I wish it were good news instead of bad.

Again, wishing all you lovely collectors down there the best. There’s alternatives for now but hoping there’ll be some broadly accepted and implemented workaround in place by the time this figures comes out.

I wonder if this inane battery law will cause manufacturers to avoid light up features to prevent issues selling items to Australia now. I kinda hope so as I find them a useless feature that has only added to the cost of items. Without a way to permanently display them ‘on’ it’s just a quick ‘hey, look at this’ gimmick that I don’t care for.
