There's an HK article that was posted up recently and it's quite interesting to read.

It's lays out how Howard started Hot Toys but one particular part stood out to me.

Chan says these licensing deals still don’t come easily. Buying the rights to make Star Wars collectibles, for example, cost more than six figures in US dollars.

"It took half a year of negotiations before we got the licence,” Chan says. “The collectibles market is an important one and they were making sequels, so it took a very long time.”

Explains why they're pushing out SW figures like crazy. Trying get the most out of paying that much for the rights alone.

So they paid something in the millions last year for the license and are still offering Obi-Wan for less than SSC's X-Wing Luke. :lol

I'm actually thrilled to know that they paid through the nose for this license. Guarantees that they won't stop after 6-8 figures.

Thanks for posting this Holo. Very interesting read. I am not surprised by the 6 figure rights to Star Wars. This is 'THE' license to hold at any scale. If Episode VII is good, Hot Toys will have many years ahead to make their money back.

6 figures for the license is nothing! We could all afford that. On average all 14 DX figures cost only $3,500! That's pennies.

Agreed, the next five years are going to be dominated by Star Wars. Hot Toys success is all down to investment - money, time, attention to detail.

"More" than six figures. AKA one or more millions.

Six figures is *only*(And i hesitate to use that word), hundreds of thousands... For a million, you need seven figures. Of course, if the six figure sum was 999,999, it *would* be a million, give or take, but if it were high six figures, they'd usually round it up to seven figures.
And, details aside, i reckon if the ENTIRE LICENCE cost six figures, HT will be coining it in over the next few years with EPs 7/8/9 coming out.

What part of "more than six figures" is so hard to understand? If the license cost $100,000, or $500,000, or $999,999 then it wouldn't be more than six figures, it would BE six figures. More than six figures means seven or more. A million. Or two million. Or 10 million. We don't know. All we do know is that it was more than $999,999.

Obi-wan was a surprise! Six of those less than $1300!

Anyway, they better make a **** load of stormtroopers then. We'd keep buying well after the license has expired!

Semantics over what '6 figures' mean. I just want more than 6 figures from each Episode 1-VII and I'll be happy.

...just to muddy up the water a bit. :rotfl

More than 6 figures can also mean more than 100,000 but less than 1,000,000. It would make no sense to say more that six figures she your saying you paid 7 figures. Also there is NO way they paid millions for the license especially since it normally only 5 years long so that means they need to make over 200k in just SW figures to make money. That also assumes there is no % of each figure on top of that.
