Hot Toys Avatar Jake Sully?

My consensus was pretty much mentioned by fellow freaks like Robbie and Evilface but here are the reasons why I think this tanked (I'm still really glad I have one and like it a lot)

1. Hot toys took too damn long to make it. They snoozed on the hype of the lisence and by the time it came out no one cared anymore.
2. They should have started with Nyteri. Now this is a little bit the opposite of the problem with the Watchmen as they did start with the main character but they didn't start with the most popular and they've pulled off this moronic idiot move too many times before. Watchmen got killed by starting with Specter, first class never got off the ground because they started with Xavier and not Magneto. They are going to kill Prometheus both because its been too long and because they are doing Shaw and not the Eingineer.
3. The design of the character, jake looks pretty cool all things considered but lets face it the movies strong point was not the character design it was the effects and the experience. The characters always reminded me of poor anatomically incorrect badly proportioned cheesy fairies that a 13 year old girl would draw.

Agreed. Although in the case of X-Men First Class they still haven't even officially announced Xavier and put him up for order so we can only speculate that he probably wouldn't have been as popular as Magneto.

honestly it's one of HT's more detailed and complex figures, and one of my favorites!
I have it and will keep it, hopefully with the new movies we'll eventually see more characters!

Man, that's way above average wage. I'll say the average here would be around $350-$500, while a minimum wage earner gets between $200-$300 (not to make anyone feel bad but yes, a Hot Toy figure is someone else's full month salary here). While cost of living here is very low, expensive hobbies such as collecting high-end collectibles is indeed for the minority. However, the inversely proportional rising of HT (as well as other collectibles) prices vs. the weak Peso against US$ is really hurting both sellers and collectors alike. I guess this is also why Jake Sully didn't sell well locally, as many here would save their $300 for figures that people think would be more worth of their budget.

When you said the Avatar figure was 120-170$, I was like: "damn, lucky you people". But with an average income of 350-500 dollars that's really expensive! :thud:

Avatar fad is over and no one wants a tall skinny blue doll on the shelf.

I actually felt that way about my Perseus figure from the new "Clash of the Titans" movie (the first one). He looked so out of place standing next to Marvel Superheroes, Terminators, and Batman related figures, even Predators figures that I packed him up. Funny how that character is played by the same actor, Sam Worthington.

I don't think the problem with First Class was that they started with Xavier. Maybe he isn't as popular as The Fass' character but he's still one of the two main characters and people have been begging for him to go up for PO for quite some time. HT's failure didn't lie with choosing him, it lied with them promising all these other licenses and then delaying them for IM3. They didn't strike while the iron (no pun intended) was hot with Avatar and they learned their lesson.

People will buy things that look cool, and the Private Military Contractors in Avatar as well as Quaritch did indeed look cool, but the real star was Neytiri. Which would you rather spend $300 on, Jake Sully or Neytiri?

I think the line would sold well if HT made Neytiri, Quaritch, and PMCs first.

Not to mention the lame, passive expression they gave him. He's shipped with a sodding great gun, but when he holds it he might as well be looking like he's thinking about picking up milk on the way home tonight.

He's a fantastic figure, but I think the lack of Neyteri is hurting sales. But they won't tool a whole new body for her since he didn't sell that well.

Maybe when the next 3 movies come out...

Yeah.. i had no interest in Sully. Dosen't help i really don't like Worthington as well.
Also wasen't impressed by the very generic cookie cutter movie either.

Neytiri i would have considered.

This figure can still be bought for retail price at Toy Hunters, which is saying alot, since HT usually sells out Pre-Orders within the 2nd month its up in HK. Alot of scalpers are just calling it a loss and selling it for about USD$150, just to get it off their hands.

Ha.. and some people still wonder why HT dwells on the Iron Man licence.

Well, no. We don't wonder, we know why they do. We just don't like it. And these other licenses would sell better if HT timed them right rather than perpetually delaying them so they can make every possible armour from each IM film. It is at least in some part HT's own fault that the Avatar line failed and that Prometheus is going to fail.

His face is passive but if you remove the head band/sunglasses he's got a serious frown. Its just hidden.

I picked him up cheaper but I think if they wouldn't have gone with the war look it would have been better. Maybe give him clothes from the start I would have been more inclined to purchase straight out.

:goodpost:

.. but would they need an entirely 'new' body?.. or would an upper body and head sculpt, plus some character specific accessories, be sufficient?

First off the jake sully they went with was not the one people wanted secondly they took forever to make this figure and once avatar was at the height of its popularity people wished and wanted neytiri to be released. Instead we got a long wait and the hype died down when they released a ****ty version of jake sully.

Since Neyteri is a female Na'vi, she'd need a more slender feminine body if they were to make her.

I'd agree with this... the War version is probably a more stiking and complicated figure. But when I think of Sully in the film I think more of his first appearance with the "human clothes" as well as his earlier training. Had they released that and then later a war paint variation I think they would have done better.
