Re: Speculation : Hot Toys "The Mandalorian" Figures

Nah, but you should really watch it. Truly good TV and arguably one of the TV shows which paved the way for good TV Sci-Fi content.......to replace that Star Trek drivel :lol

Good to see you are also up on the best of the best. GoT, Breaking Bad and X-Files all my favourites.

Hopefully we can add The Mandalorian to that list.

My absolute all time favourite is Twin Peaks. I love the hilarious twisted weirdness of it (and all things David Lynch actually). X-Files and Millennium run it close though. I'm binge watching X-Files as we speak actually. When I've finished that I'll be sure to check out Battlestar Galactica (and Clone Wars) now that you've assured me it's not like Star Trek.

As for The Mandalorian I can't wait for some more footage to talk about as we're living off scraps atm. Still crossing my fingers for an announcement of that Obi-Wan series with Ewan.

Yeah, I forgot that they may announce the Obi-Wan project too. I think they said there were at least 1-2 more in development. Considering how much had already gone in to the movie, hopefully they could adapt it pretty easily to TV long format and add in more detail to where ever they wanted.

Doubt there will be anything much on B&W Old Republic stuff. However they hopefully give us a couple of tidbits just to let us know it is still alive. Personally I don't need to hear anything about Ryan Johnson.

I recommend Clone Wars. I watched with my son and it was really very good. Sure there are some filler episodes, but the good ones were really good. The whole Darth Maul arc and just the dynamic between Obi-Wan, Anakin and Ahsoka. Really shows how you can flesh out a story, like we'll get with the live action stuff I hope.

Anyone else feel free to join in here.......:lol

No takers haha

If they do an Obi-Wan limited series (say 6-8 episodes) then they should definitely add Maul and 'Force Ghost' Qui-Gon into it. In fact, there's no excuse for not using Vader. Imagine a scenario of Vader 'The Jedi Hunter' tracking down surviving Jedi from Order 66 and Obi-Wan (and Yoda) trying to aid them. Actually, you could easily get 2 seasons of content out of that.

No idea what the hell's going on with the Benioff and Weiss stuff. On one hand I'm really excited at the prospect of them doing the Old Republic. On the other hand the rumours of Rian Johnson working with them and directing terrifies me. Although I would like to see one director for the trilogy rather than swapping and changing like the ST. Would love Denis Villeneuve to direct, but he's probably going to be wrapped up in Dune for the next few years. Would also be delighted to see Christopher Nolan directing the trilogy. That's maybe unlikely. For me, the Russo Brothers would make perfect sense. B & W and Dave Filoni penning a KOTOR trilogy directed by the Russo Brothers. That has me salivating.

I did three seasons of Clone Wars previously, but stopped watching for some reason.

It's cool, if it's just us chatting here then it'll at least stop our mailbox getting full :lol I guess our conversation is so good people don't want to break the "flow". Then again, they have probably all just unsubscribed :lol

Yeah you're right about Obi-Wan. There is more potential story and stuff to do than you initially think. However I guess they do need to be a bit careful not to upset any OT Canon.

I read an article today about Star Wars no longer being cool or appealing for young kids. Marvel is the new cool. Also mentioned that Star Wars toy sales are terrible after Ep8, Solo etc. Rian Johnson was also still included in the discussion for new stuff. I just cringe when I read his name. Sorry ST fans, but that is my immediate reaction. I really hope he's not involved in anything going forward.

Denis Villeneuve is my current favourite director. Blade Runner 2049 was amazing !!! Did you know throughout the movie whenever the colour palette was blue he was going in the wrong direction in his investigations, and orange indicated correct direction. Just the visuals were amazing. Anyway I'll stop before this ends up in a Blade Runner rant. That said I'm not sure he is exactly the right fit for Star Wars. He's more artistic. Nolan I'd be open to. If he hadn't done Batman I'd say he's too serious. But he'd bring a decent movie to the table. Just I have the feeling Disney wants wholesome fun with Star Wars.

Yep Russo Brothers would be a great fit. They know how to please crowds, have fan service and spin a good coherent story. They would also have a plan, unlike some others within Disney.

How early does the Day-Schedule for D23 come out ? Probably a week or so before I guess. I think they usually talk about it on the official Star Wars show.

I guess all the others are still too excited about The Last Jedi to think about The Mandalorian yet haha

Then again I'm probably on most people's block list after saying Wicket will overtake the Death Star Trooper as the most wanted SW figure if it's not released :lol

Rogue One managed not to ''break the flow'' of A New Hope and the OT, so I think, if done well, Obi-Wan should be able to do the same. Give it to a Star Wars guy and there'll be no issues there. I know I keep banging his drum, and I swear I'm not his agent, but an Obi-Wan series would be absolutely perfect for a Dave Filoni solo project. He's more than earned his stripes by now. Who better to tie the prequel trilogy with the original trilogy? Which is exactly what an Obi-Wan series would need to accomplish. I'd even be down for Gareth Edwards coming in and directing a couple of episodes.

As for toy sales, fans are fickle. If The Mandalorian is great, and there's no reason to believe it won't be, and Episode IX delivers at a similar level as Revenge of the Sith did with the PT, then those toys will be shifted again. It's really strange as far as Hot Toys goes though, are they suffering the same issue of diminishing toy sales as other companies? I know there's still quite a few TFA troopers hanging around, but their Star Wars line appears to still be selling extremely well. Original trilogy figures will always sell, prequel trilogy figures seem to be extremely popular (there's massive potential for the next 5 years there), Rogue One figures sold out and are now amongst the most valuable HT figures, Solo figures, despite the film's poor box office, appear to be selling well, and even some of The Last Jedi figures (i.e. Rey and Kylo) have sold out most places. My suggestion for anyone would be to snap up those Mandalorian figures while they're available as I can only see them going the same way as the Rogue One figures.

Oh man, Denis Villeneuve, I couldn't agree more. There can't have been a better director produced in the last 10 years than that guy. I swear to God it's impossible for him to make a bad film. He's now establishing himself as the master of modern sci-fi (along with Alex Garland). Blade Runner 2049 was a perfect 10 for me, as was Arrival. Btw my absolute Villeneuve favourites are Enemy and Sicario. I didn't actually realise that about the colour palette, despite watching in multiple times. Thanks for pointing that out, I'll watch it with new eyes next time. Roger Deakins' cinematography is lush. It may not have had the greatest box office but it will go down in 15-30 years time as being one of the greatest sci-fi masterpieces of the 21st century, and of all time. The original Blade Runner easily gets into my top 10 films of all time, so to see a sequel do so much justice to the original and take the ''franchise'' (I hate that word) in a new direction was an absolute delight to witness. Now to see him take on Dune, a story described as possibly the greatest ever sci-fi story, is almost beyond belief. It may well end up being the first truly great film of the 2020s.

Oh, and btw, this is a leaked list (courtesy of Reddit) of Black Series figures coming for Force Friday. It may give us an indication of what we're likely to get from Hot Toys in the coming months.

Haha awesome. I was contemplating putting you on my blocklist for that comment :lol

Episode 2 of a Trilogy has almost always got to be the worst for Toy makers. Characters are the same, people aren't always interested in getting every single character iteration in toy form etc etc. So yeah I think you could be right that things will pick up for the final instalment.....assuming it's good. As we've said HT better make at least 2 of the Knights of Ren.

Villeneuve is great. But yes Roger Deakins made the difference in the cinematography. Just visually amazing. Link below for that video I was talking about analysing the film, colour palettes used, cinematography etc.

I really need to see Enemy. And probably watch Arrival and the original Blade Runner again actually. It's been awhile.

Re: Speculation : Hot Toys "The Mandalorian" Figures

Thanks for the list. Yes Reddit is always to be taken with a pretty big grain of salt. However I wonder if HT will follow with a couple of them.

I guess The Mandalorian is pretty much a given as the first figure.

Haha it was more than a little tongue in cheek. Although I would love an Ewok, especially one of the mean looking ones. I might suggest Snoke would be more worthy of a Hot Toys figure than Bespin Han and see how that goes down lmao.

Interesting idea about episode 2 of a trilogy being the weakest in toy sales. I wonder how ESB faired with toy sales in comparison to ANH and ROTJ back in the day.

And yes you absolutely should watch Enemy, and Prisoners if you haven’t already.

As for those figures, i’d say there’s at least a 50% chance we’ll be getting a HT IG-11 droid to compliment Mando Pascal.

After re-watching that youtube video I also want to watch 2049 again !

Actually when I heard the droid was most probably not IG-88 I took the opportunity to get a SS IG-88 that was on sale in a local shop. 50% off ! Can't go wrong. IG-11 will probably be cooler somehow (with far more screen time) but IG-88 is OT, so he can stand with Bossk to either side of Boba Fett.

Re: Speculation : Hot Toys "The Mandalorian" Figures

I think a Mandalorian is inevitable, but the question is if he'll be teased early or after the show launches for a while. I think the answer to that lies in if they'll market him as masked or unmasked, which depends on how much of the promo material for the show sequesters his appearance under the helmet. I'm sure they could just say accessories coming soon, but they've never done that with sculpts. Usually they are blurred out, as sculpts are HUGE draws to sale.

The idea of having a Mando with IG-11 (assuming they are partners of some sort) as a counter-shelf to K2 and Jyn would be awesome. I have a lot of faith in HT droids with how well K2 is done.

Yes it's a bit of a lottery as to what they could offer. I think I recall hearing The Mandalorian will update his armour during the show. With that, and new territory of TV being a core medium for Star Wars we don't know how Hot Toys will approach it.

If they did approach it like movies, they will probably offer the masked version and initial armour first. Then (if successful) second season with head sculpt and updated armour version. But as there is so much unknown i.e if it will be popular or if TV works. Then I'd say they will probably go with no headsculpt to begin with. That's the safest bet.

You're right about K2. That's at least one advantage of being where we are. Disney at least knows what works and what doesn't work as far as new droids. That Solo droid was very annoying, but K2SO was great and pretty much universally loved by fans. So let's hope they do him in a cool way. I have faith in Favreau and Filoni there.

I mean they've done TV before, and they have a "TMS" series because of Prison Break and the Netflix Marvel stuff. I don't think that jump is at all unreasonable.

I think you're spot on with that. Effectively the first will be his dirtied, old gear which can be marketed akin to a "movie promo" edition. Plus if those promo shots of him with shiny, silver gear are any indication, that transition will warrant a new fig either way. And like I said, headsculpts are a draw. So you're right to think they'd use that to cop a second sale out of folks.

I'm super excited for IG-11, mainly because Taika is voicing him. He just brings it in everything, and I think a painfully loony/unhinged IG droid who's extremely trigger happy totally suits something that Taika would create in his mind. We've got a sarcastic bot in K2, a logical one in 3PO, let's bring a third aspect of personality to the "good droids" and delve into irrationality.

Yeah, that scene in the Celebration footage where IG-11 spins around and lets loose in the open area of that Tatooine street area comes directly to mind. And the cheers that go up at that point were pretty loud.

It also reminds me of the assassin droids with Dr Aphra. While I didn't really like the take on them as C3PPO and R2D2 exact copies, the idea you paint of a trigger happy assassin droid could be very cool.

I forget to thank you for the link, I'll watch it today.

I wonder if HT making an IG-11 increases or decreases the likelihood of them making an IG-88 any time soon?

Re: Speculation : Hot Toys "The Mandalorian" Figures

Rather than releasing two separate versions of the Mandalorian, to reflect his armour upgrades, they should do what they did with the ESB Boba Fett deluxe and include extra inter-changeable armour pieces. Although it looks like it may be worthy of buying two of, one for displaying in the initial armour with head sculpt and the other in the fully upgraded shiny Mando armour with helmet on.

Yeah definitely do that. It's not long.

That's an interesting point about IG-88. I guess it does increase the chances quite a bit.

I'm more than happy with my purchase of the SS version. $130USD for a 1/6 IG-88 is not bad in this day and age. Although a heavily reduced IG-88 does perhaps say something in itself. Maybe they know another Hot Toys IG is coming ??

You can't pass up on it at that price. You'd probably be able to sell it for more than that if you decided to re-sell. It could still be years before HT make an IG-88.

Just had a look there is a grand totally of 4x TMS figures. Starts at #3 so not sure about #1 & #2.

But as you said that line exists, so it's not a hard transition. I didn't really watch the Punisher and those TV shows. But that's a really good sign that Hot Toys has already made figures for Disney TV franchises.

Re: Speculation : Hot Toys "The Mandalorian" Figures

Hopefully, this thread can start to liven up next week after D23. I figured Disney was hush about this at SDCC last month so they could do all the announces themselves.

Oh yeah, I'm expecting HD footage in a proper trailer, more details and hopefully some more aliens.

A behind the scenes type trailer would be awesome too.
