Glad to know that I'm not alone on that one FACE. I thought the same damn thing.

But, it's a cool fig none the less.

It really does.

The hip has to go too far back to be able to get into that pose.

Doesn't look natural.

He does look pretty weird...
Come on Hot Toys!! Step up with this one!!

Awesome sculpt, but something about it still looks unnatural.
IMO it looks like it's being forced to walk on all fours, and not [natural]
Hopefully I will be able to get some better poses out of that B**.

A little OT, but I think I did a good job putting the AVP:R figure in a crouched position. (almost)

I'll just wait to see how the A3-Xeno looks in hand before my final judgement.

The problem is that the Ilium is attached to the hip on Hot Toys' figure, so when you move the leg, the ilium moves with it. It's unnatural when compared to normal anatomy and to pictures of the actual Dog Alien.
Check out Sideshow's maquette and Diorama:

Only the leg moves forward, the Ilium stays stationary, it shouldn't rotate.
But at least it can crouch and run, I wouldn't want a Dog Alien that couldn't stand on all fours.

EDIT:
I just checked out the Maquette in 360, and the Ilium DOES move along with the leg on that one too. It may look unnatural, but I think that's the way it was intended since the Maquette was made by Amalgamated Dynamics, the same SFX company that brought it to life in the movie.

Sorry for the double post, but I don't think that's the only issue.
IMO, either the arms and torso are too short, or the legs are too long.

I think the ?caffs? (spelling) should be able to go flush against the thighs. Same goes for the lower shins.
The head/neck should be more "back" too.

I think Hot Toys is trying to balance a realistic look for the Runner while retaining the unique poseability and qualities it had in the movie.

It was easier to hide the joints on the more "human-build" Aliens but with the way his legs are structured hiding the joints could be tough so they went for an internal look.

It appears Hot Toys is using this as an experiment piece for some new joint styles. Hopefully within the arms and legs are actual joints and not just metal wire. Because a metal wire couldn't handle the constant strain from so many shifts in the joints and I'm sure Hot Toys might have a lot of problems with the figure in that case.

My first PredAlien had a broken wire in his tail. It's a THICK wire, but it isn't invincible...so I hope inside these legs and arms is not metal wires but something unique and durable.

I dunno...I'm also not sold on this figure and haven't pre-ordered it yet. The legs look mostly rubber, which I'm not crazy about. I'm wondering if it might have turned out better if they did more traditional, rigid joints? The 'flow' of the legs in the crouched position just doesn't look right.

On the plus side, it doesn't look like it should ahve the joint issues that plagued the 'Aliens Warrior' figures :monkey3

I agree that the head and neck should go further back, but the arms and legs look about the right length. With the arms down at the creature's sides, the wrist would line up with his crotch. The knees should come up to the creature's arm pits and the lower leg, and foot+toes should be equal in length to the thigh.
If you compare the Diorama and Maquette, the proportions are also off there between the two (also note the discrepancy with Ilium movement), the legs are a bit beefer and head a bit larger on the Diorama.
But both Dio and Maquette look right to me. My biggest issues with the Hot Toys' Alien is the sculpt of the Alien's skin isn't as accurate and as smooth and slick as it is on both the Diorama and Maquette.
The HT Dog Alien needs better sculpted leg muscles and a heavy coat of gloss finish.

As long as I can get the figure into This pose I'll be satisfied:

Here are a few more shots of the real puppet:

Great post Facebox! Now that I see that, the calves of the legs do look a little too short and thick. The actual puppet's legs look like a dog's leg that has had the skin pulled off with the smooth muscles and texture. the Hot Toy's figure looks too rough and irregular. I wish the artists at Hot Toys would try and stick to the reference material as close as possible.

Appreciate it more after seeing the production pics....but I really wish they had included something extra. Also worried about the wires inside the arms and legs not to mention the durability of the rubber covering. It looks like the arms on the dog alien will work like the tails of previous aliens (with a wire running through the entire arm).

its just a guess, but im thinking the wires are there just for the sculpting and molds. I would think the production will have joints? I could be wrong.

I'm hoping the dog alien will have the usual joints, but in all the photos they show of the arm they don't have the usual hidden joint mechanism at the elbows.

I'm really starting to think that the entire arm will be wired.... went back to Joseph's blog and took a look at his "making of Aliens" and the casting for its arm came in two pieces as opposed to the dog alien which is one piece. I guess the leg will also be wired but it'll only be able to bend at two points.

It's looking good but I'll wait for someone to get it in hand and do a review.

Hope they add in another accessory ( like a burst out dog carcass , not sure how that would go over with the dog lover crowd though.... ) at some point.

GG

I wouldn't count on any new accessories. The official specs have already been announced.

I understand what a pain in the butt it can be to sculpt an accurate alien.
But then again, I don't understand what's so frigging hard about sculpting an accuarte alien!
It's just damn lazy.
And going with wires for articulation is just the ultimate in design laziness.
Screw you HT.

Yeah, I'm pissed off at HT, so sue me. :D

I will, to court with ya.:D:monkey3

I think that the arms will have wires, and I fear for the durability of this guy.

It's bewildering, how you can come up with a great idea (hide the joints with rubber coverings and work the sculpt around it to make it less conspicuous) and then discard it!
I've come to accept the fact that HT don't give a damn about aliens and are all Predator fanboys.
