I'm tired of Batman/Iron Man/Star Wars... I understand the craze behind many of these but I'm a collector of movie characters - I'd like to see figures from Kill Bill, Sin City, Pulp Fiction, Leone, The Raid... there's simply so many characters they could make, yet all we are given is Iron Man 1 - 100, and Joker 1, 2, etc.
I'm amazed at how myopic and money minded a company can be to the point that it's no longer doing anything to retain class, style, or grace. I'd never pay 250 dollars for Iron Man.... I would for whiplash, but that's because I'm a fan of different characters. Iron Man is too conventional... it's a toy, not a collectible... just my opinion...
I'm also personally tired of the Iron Man stuff. This million versions of Iron Man thing that's been going on with Hot Toys lately is getting very old in my honest opinion. I know he made a ton of suits in the films, but honestly, I don't see the need for a figure of every single suit he made in the movie plus whatever else they decide to add that wasn't in the movies. Many of these Iron Man MK ___ figures aren't really very drastically different from one and other in terms of overall big picture anyways, which makes it very hard for me to justify buying them. The only time I ever bought an Iron Man figure was early last year when I pre-ordered the MK VII from The Avengers, and ever since getting that, I've been satisfied, and I haven't felt any need to even look into any other Iron Man figures at all. The people at Hot Toys are perfectly capable of making great figures from licenses other than Iron Man and Batman, yet that doesn't seem to happen as often as it really should lately.
I've been waiting a long time for a very good Episode III Anakin Skywalker figure (which I really hope they are doing here), and I've also been very patiently waiting for that Smooth Criminal figure they announced all that time ago that doesn't seem likely to happen anymore. I know there are custom Smooth Criminal figures out there and I've seen them floating around on various sites... the issue for me lies within the asking price for those figures. Nine out of ten times that I've seen a custom Smooth Criminal figure, the seller wants upwards of half a grand for the figure or more. I don't really have more than $350-$400 to spend on
any figure, period. I like to collect figures, yeah, but I don't feel like any figure is really worth more than $450 bucks unless its got some extremely drastic features to justify that kind of pricing.
The lack of releases for the abundance of licenses (other than Iron Man) that Hot Toys has is certainly a reasonable cause for frustration for collectors. There are so many great figures that could come out, yet we've gotten such a massive amount of Iron Man variants over the last year that it's gotten to the point where many people are getting tired of even just
hearing announcements or seeing previews that point towards
yet another Iron Man figure being released.
I'm glad to see that some of their other licenses besides Batman and Iron Man are finally getting love though. The upcoming RoboCop and Crow figures look really great. I just wish they'd do more with other licenses more frequently. For example, a Police Station Massacre version of the T-800 from The Terminator would really be cool, and new Rocky figures would be great (though I think they may have lost the license to Rocky, I don't remember at this point).
