I just finished my preferred version, although I did use the pants, bracelets and moccasin feet from Hot Toys Tonto.

I thought the movie was ok. I felt some of the scenes went on for to long. I am a fan of the Lone Ranger tv show. I can appreciate the detail that Hot Toys put into this figure. It's a great looking figure.

Ive repainted the headsculpt and am in the process of weathering the clothing, as well as making a full diorama stand for the figure. More pictures of the finished piece coming soon.

Congrats ZsaszSays! Very nice I still want to pick this up for the collection but at this point I'll keep waiting for the price to drop some more.

Thanks fellas. :duff
Ape Man...its definitely worth the purchase if you loved the movie. Most are retailing at $150/160 now and for the amount of accessories and detail you really cant beat the price. Especially if you can get the face paint touched up, it brings out the likeness ten-fold.

Here's a WIP of the new diostand Im building for him.

Looking great man! Yeah the price has definitely dropped I just got other things I'll be buying first. I'll probably receive this as a gift sometime this year who knows we'll see. Definitely by November I'll pick Tonto up.

ZsaszSays, beautiful!

Thanks guys. :duff I completed it yesterday. Ill upload some promo pics once I get some sunshine where I live...its been raining for days. The stand was made completely from scratch using a basswood base, real wood and leather for the tepee, real rocks that were painted to match the surroundings, and dyed sea-sponge for the shrubbery. Tonto himself was completely weathered and the headsculpt was repainted. Overall Im really happy with how it came out. Even though the movie gets a bad rep, this figure doesnt get the attention it deserves and Im happy to have this in my collection.

Thanks guys, appreciate the feedback. Earlier in the week I had the chance to take out the whole piece to an area about 10 minutes from my place to get some good pictures of it. The figure photographs so well, Im still puzzled how a guy on here said the NECA version was better. :lol

That was me, and I stand by it. Michael Crawford is one of the most respected voices in the hobby (and a huge Hot Toys fan), and here's what he has to say about the Hot Toys version:

Something got lost on this sculpt - it's not one of their best. I mentioned that providing a photo of the actual character on the front of the box is good and bad. The good is that you can easily compare the sculpt to the real deal. The bad is you can easily compare the sculpt to the real deal.

And the comparison here clearly shows the issues. The ancillary areas are terrific - the head band, the funky crow, the feathers. The nose and lips are dead on as well, but the shape of the face, particularly along the jawline and chin, is off.

I'm also not digging the blank, mannequin expression. The eyes have no life, no subtle mood. In the photo they clearly do - part of this is due to the placement, with him looking to the side. But it's much more than that. The slight squint is all it takes to show something life-like in that look, and that's completely missing from the figure. Instead, he has a wider eyed, dead stare.

This is the sort of minor detail that Hot Toys usually nails, and what sets them apart. It's missing this time around, and the figure pays the price.

Later, he adds,

As I played around with this figure, I couldn't help but feel as though the production quality was down. Some of the accessories - particularly the watches - didn't seem up to expectations, and the overall look of the portrait wasn't selling him.

(To be fair, he did favor the Hot Toys arm paint over the NECA version).

In his concluding thoughts:

The best toys produced for the movie were from NECA

Meanwhile, one thing Crawford fails to note is that the Hot Toys body is comically inaccurate. Here's Depp:

Here's the Hot Toys body:

The goddamn Lego Tonto has a more accurate Depp body than the Hot Toys Tonto.

Here's NECA's:

The Hot Toys Tonto is a beautifully painted mannequin that in no way resembles the actor.

NECA for the win!

...that said, I want to concede two very important things.

First, your diorama is brilliant, man. I have wanted a teepee for my NECA Tonto for months. Top-notch work, and if you ever think of accepting commissions, please keep me in mind.

Second, from my most recent Facebook update:

You know you need to get a life when you're conducting google image searches for "johnny depp shirtless" at 5:00 in the morning just to win an internet argument.

:)

I agree that the body is inaccurate. But with a quick repaint of HT's headsculpt, it whoops the NECA's.
And Im always accepting commissions, for any scale. If you need anything just email me at [email protected]. :duff
