I might have sounded too judgmental about the Hugo likeness,
but it's probably because I am a professional portrait sculptor.
For me, it's all too easy to visualize a direct comparison between
the real actor's face and that fuzzy scanned inch-tall photo.
The likeness is very close, but considering the price will likely be
around $200, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect extremely close if possible.
That sounds a bit snobby, but consider:
There are cases in which the rights to the actors' likeness are not granted at all. (John Hurt / Kane)
So, when the rights ARE granted, full advantage should be taken, and that extra mile should be trod
on the part of the sculptors.
I know from personal experience how difficult it can be to make a small portrait
look extremely true to the original, and HT has succeeded many times.
The Bat-Cowl notwithstanding, HT has done an exquisite likeness of Michael Keaton, yes?
And Christopher Reeve as well. (I've PO'd both of them, because they're just too good.)
All I'm saying is, don't be afraid to desire excellence. It's a win-win attitude.
