I think this is gonna look good; I also think this is way more work than I'd have liked. :p

OMG, ZE, I see color in your house. Definitely a red cup in the background. :lol

Excellent work on the trooper. I'm behind, are you matching a marmit helmet to the HT trooper?

Thank you! I've been customizing what was a Hot Toys Short trooper (I had more than one.)

TO DATE:

  • Body swap to Soldier Story S2.5.
  • Hot Toys trooper arms were grafted on to the S2.5 to avoid having to grind down the S2.5 arms to accept HT armour.
  • Marmit Sandtrooper helmet was stripped, re-painted and glossed to replace stock HT helmet. HT mic tips added.

WHAT REMAINS:

  • Clean-up, re-touching on helmet.
  • Detailing on helmet (traps, tears etc.)
  • Printing out stripes on decal paper for helmet (there will also be a No Stripes version.)
  • Cutting out eye-holes, very slightly larger and installing green film gels for lenses.
  • Adding a head sculpt beneath helmet, mostly so it sits naturally as I won't use the "reveal" most of the time.
  • Subtle weathering.
  • Not sure about body-swapping another yet but definitely doing at least one more helmet.

Modded trooper is taller than even the tall HT trooper by a touch; armour hangs a little more wonky, authentic ANH style. Arms can now hang tight to the body.

It'll probably be a couple of weeks to a month before it's all done. I burned a lot of hours today on that helmet, but it's a learning curve too.

Ssc, ht, marmit I'll probably transfer the marmit to Tt knockoff( had to do that with the sandtrooper) with sideshow hands but paint I will just leave as is, sideshows I'll probably sell I have two and the HT I might do the wax treatment for a super clean look

Okay, work in progress.

It needs touch-ups, another coat of gloss, detailing etc.

This is my first run so who knows, maybe I'll do it differently on the next.

The differences are subtle but telling, IMO.

Looking good and blending well. Nice shoulder surgery btw. :hi5:

Thanks Niltusk!

This morning over coffee I cut out and re-sculpted the eyes. May need refinement later. The "lenses" you see are temporary until I get the green gel.

Trooper Heads will note the shape of the right eye socket.

On the off chance that people watching this thread aren't in the Spacetrooper thread:

As I thought, the Hot Toys is over-scaled; I can't find my digital callipers but using a measuring tape, it looks like:

via RPF: ...length (not including stock or sling loop thingies): 18 1/32". (Sterling SMG)

Converted for 1/6 should be 7.63cm.

I haven't measured the SSC as I don't have one to hand right now, but HT comes in at about 7.8cm or a hair under.

SSC may have got it right***

EDIT: found my digital measurements...

SSC E-11 is 7.9 and HT is actually 8.21.

The SSC has a touch less bulk as well so while likely still over-scaled, it beats HT.

The slightly less bulky look of the HT DLT-19 may be more accurate, I'll measure length on that next.

It's looking like the recipe for the ideal 1/6 stormtrooper for obsessed nerds like me is:

  • Hot Toys armour set.
  • Re-worked and re-painted Marmit Sandtrooper (stunt) helmet.
  • Body swap for natural posture.
  • SSC E-11 blaster.
  • Replace chest armour with re-sculpted Marmit armour for a more pronounced curve. (Haven't tried this yet.)

Off to Google MG-34 the DLT-19 is based off...okay...at 1/6 it should be 19.8cm long if the 501rst specs I found are correct...aaand...

20.4cm from muzzle to top of the butt. 20cm if we ignore the projection. So even though it's slimmer than SSC's it's still too long. Anyone have the SSC one handy??

And just for fun...the MG-34 that ships with the Marmit is....20.9cm at the top, or 20.5 for the shorter length.

^^do you have a sense of how the helmet is scaled on the HT Stormtrooper? Next to the Snowtrooper the HT helmet looks a bit big. From pics though the SS helmet seems to be the same size.

My work space is a mess right now and I can't find my digital Vernier gauge, so precise measurements will have to wait. I can tell you from eyeballing film footage that the helmets don't look big to me, although the HT proportions are slightly off in a couple of spots that may contribute to an illusion that they're too big.

The lateral tubes are a little too bulky and drop near the front too much...too jowly if you will although not as bad as SSC...and the "face" is narrower than the Marmit, which wouldn't be much of an issue if the lateral tubes weren't too bulky. The frown is also an idealized hybrid of Hero/Stunt which screws up one's perception of the shape.

It's actually a really complicated interaction of shapes. I'll try to sculpt one from scratch some day; to be honest I wouldn't trust myself to do it digitally even though I work with that software...I'll try it by hand where I can make minute adjustments on the fly.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Hot Toys stormtrooper as-is...I'm just of the mindset that if I can improve it sooner or later I will. In this case slightly sooner. :rotfl

I've got my WIP in front of me and it's really starting to give me the right vibe with the asymmetric eyes, higher brow, and leaner tubes.

I must enjoy this torture because man, it's a lot of work I should probably be pouring into something productive. :horror

*You just know my girl was away visiting her sister. :monkey3

since this is shipping now Im hoping I can pick this up when Im going to New York in s couple of weeks.

Get your orders in for these now. Looks like Rogue One is going to have the original stormtroopers in it. Demand will skyrocket in about 18 months time!

Just saw the teaser. Disney is going in full throttle I see.

I'm really curious as to how the stormtroopers will look in the contemporary films. The teaser had a different tone...kinda gritty.

The concept art was amazing.

I'm sure we'll get some new troopers, but given this is right before ANH there surely must be some standard Stormies.

Right; that's what I'm wondering about. Will they look like cleaned up ANH or ESB troopers? Or ROTJ-ish? With Lucas gone I'm thinking more the former...

Thanks for the nice breakdown. :duff
I'm just going by my other figures around it and maybe that's playing a part as i know the SS Vader dome is undersized and maybe the Snowtrooper helmet is a bit under scaled too (though it does look about right next to the new Hoth figures). The bucket is huge on the Stormies in general and it's not like we ever see them next to snowtroopers.
I just have this impression going back to the first pic we saw of the HT Luke head on the short trooper that that head looked a tad small on the HT stormie.

That could be more of an internal scale issue. The 1/6 armour is also a touch thick (any thinner at this scale and it starts getting delicate) which would add some subtle bulk, plus it doesn't hang very naturally on the stock body, although not bad by any stretch.

The people who already collect this kind of thing are for the most part going to be the same people that collect 18 months from now - a few will drop off and some new hobbyists will join in, as always. Demand for OT Stromtroopers isn't going to change with a new movie. Their image is already one of the most iconic in film history - it's hard to go up from the top. It's possible there may still be some of these around in 18 months, but irrespective of the new movie, I wouldn't be surprised if they were sold out by then.
