Yeah, living overseas often gets you a 25-30% mark-up on anything you order. Not so much bothered by taxes but fees charged over that are just disgusting. Mostly doubles VAT.
if it's not exclusive to certain webstores you can actually try ordering from toy shops around Asia, there's quite a few reputable ones that offer their stuffs close to HK/Japan price and you get discounts for preorders, and also points, only thing is you need to pay more for the shipping, but I'm guessing total would be less than if you order from say Canada/UK/Europe or even USA stores if it's something made by HK/Japan companies. Other than Japan most Asia shops tend to be flexible when it comes down to declaring the value and sending as gifts, just remind them to pack properly coz some sellers skimp on packagings.
plus strong USD makes it cheaper to purchase from overseas.
