I'm new to this site although not new to collecting 1/6 figures, so please forgive me if this question has already been answered.
While I love the Hot Toys Stormtroopers and own several of them, the helmet is far from accurate as I think has been mentioned before in this thread. My question is, is there any reason in today's world of 3D scanning why an original suit helmet and all could not be almost exactly replicated in 1/6 figure form?

Toomuchgarlic on here has scanned a screen-used stormie helmet to use for 1/6, though I'm not sure we'll ever see that offered.

The HT helmet is a just-okay depiction of the "hero" helmet - it would have been great to have seen the stunt version, which is more iconic for ANH stormies.

Why don't they scan the prop? Who knows.

You don't need to scan a prop to get it right. Somebody in the pipeline just needs to want it enough.

They will have an excuse to make another figure saying "scanned from original, the most accurate 1/6 helmet" or something like that. :)

Yeah just seems as though... Why not use the technology if it's there?! Surely it wouldn't cost the earth to have an original suit scanned and shrunk down to 1/6 figure form. I know I for one would buy a whole legion of the things :yess:

By the way Talibane, do you know if there are any pics of Toomuchgarlics 1/6 helmet on here? I'd love to see how it turned out!

I saw a rendering of that helmet and it made me drool. Then it brought Nerd Rage. :lol

I work with both Rhino and ZBrush. The problem for me is that right now I can't afford the time to work on passion projects, or I'd try it. But realistically, I don't know if it'd ever get done.

I have a feeling that someone, somewhere, is going to do it right in the next few years, given Disney's Star Wars deluge. But at what scale or format, who knows?

The best we've got is pretty damn good, but none of it is what it should be. The stormtrooper helmet is a likeness issue.

There is a thread in the customs section for a 1/6 Vader Helmet project or along those lines...images and updates in there.

With the new, quite low priced Anovos helmets (which are not 100% accurate, but better than say the HT sculpt) and 3d scanners getting cheaper - along with print quality getting better - scaning should be easier and cheaper option these days.

After a quick search on Google, it looks like someone is already doing scanned 1/6 helmets for sale. Check this link out! 1:6 Scale accurate stormtrooper helmet (BNWU2X4H5) by bobsbits

Nice work. Upon cursory inspection, I think it may be sculpted rather than scanned. I have direct experience with the material used .. it does have some grain/texture to it, should be easily covered by paint. I'm going to grab one and see if it's scaled right.

Yeah same as, for £20 it's worth a gamble

EFX has scanned the prop for their lines. I have the licensed authentic prop replica of the hero ANH helmet but the one I have is cast from one of the originals, not scanned. At a Comicon panel a few years back they said they 3D scanned the helmet and I believe were doing a new line of helmets. I saw the Biker Scout helmet at Wondercon but they sold out in pre-order already. Looked awesome.

The 3D scans are out there already and I am sure more will come as I bet there will be some digital doubles for Stormies in Rogue One.

One thing to keep in mind, the props themselves are not always awesome, they do the job of completing the illusion of working gear ON FILM. On close inspection of the hero helmet for example, you can see the seams along the jaw line when looking from above and up close you can tell what is decal vs paint vs greeble where on film, it all looked like a much sturdier/functioning product.

I would rather have a 1/6th representation of what the actual character would be rather than a prop replication in cases like this. I don't want duct tape, seams, etc created down to the detail but rather what all that appeared like in a functioning universe if you will.

That's where our opinions differ. The more " screen accurate " the better for me. I have an RSPROPS set of Armour ESB Style which I have made to look as if it has just stepped off the set of Cloud City i.e slight wear, marks scratches, paint slop etc.. Now for me if they could shrink that sort of detail down and produce a figure with all the little flaws of the original amour Duck tape and all, man I would be in SW 1/6th heaven!
