To be precise about the original model and design. They used Joe Johnston's drawings as a guide to build a maquette. This maquette is a 3D detailed sketch to see how the translation from 2D to 3D works. The ILM modelers used commercially available kits to make this maquette, mainly Tamiya ones: racing car models (4 types have been ID), the 20mm Flak , and a space shuttle.

From this maquette, they made a blueprint for the full size prop and the 1/4 scale models used.

Very happy to see a Hot Toys scout trooper and speeder bike, but DEFINITELY holding out for the Endor ROTJ version. Hopefully that will be available soon.
