Here we go again with the lazy Mary Sue references. The original meaning of this label has been completely erased and at this point is given to any female character someone doesn’t like.

*props chin on hands* okay, I will bite.

Lay out your arguments as to why she isn't a Mary Sue. Because this label retains a great deal of meaning and all of it applies to the character in question.

It's a term that applies specifically to Rey now. Lucasfilm made her the unquestioned ultimate all time Mary Sue.

It's lost all meaning because no one could ever Mary Sue better than Rey.

The Mando War episode from CW with Ahsoka was overpowered AF. That was Mary Sue territory. And she survived an encounter with Vader.

Trained by Anakin, not Vader. He has the power of the dark side.
So? The dark side isn't invincible.

Ahsoka was directly trained by Anakin, who is also Vader. He still fights like Anakin even if he can Force choke now. She also had a lot of lessons from Obi-Wan who defeated Vader, and she also worked with Plo Koon a number of times, who was a powerful member of the Council.

If anyone could go toe to toe with Vader and survive, it's her. In fact, Ahsoka fighting Vader and surviving is a lot more believable than Luke fighting Vader and surviving.

Google it and read the Wiki. I’m done with this tired topic.

MARY SUEEEEE WAHAHAHA !!!!

I rewatched the Rebels clip. Never showed her with an upper hand so she wasn't stronger. She Force Pushed him yet Dooku didn't in Ep3. Let's face it, the Jedi power levels are all over the place and a joke anyway. Plo Koon got clowned by Sidious in 2 seconds and we all know the leap into the high ground was the dumbest ending to any fight ever. I still can't figure out how Obi-Wan got tossed and not Anakin in Ep3. Clearly the dark side is stronger when you can get cut in half and survive a billion foot drop.

This thread is turning into actual AIDS.

Ahsoka rules. No one has to like any character in particular, but calling her a Mary Sue is actually a stupid opinion, I’m sorry. I don’t know how someone can have the story she has and be written off as a Mary Sue. That’s just absurd.

If you don’t like her story or personality that’s fine. But acting like she isn’t a character who did it all to get where she got is stupid. She won battles, she lost battles. She got people killed, she saved lives. She learned hard lessons, she taught others to fend for themselves. She was loyal but not blind. We watched her make mistakes and we watched her win great victories.

I gotta think some of you are just trolling.

You have lain down your sword and retreated from the field of battle; this is good because I was about to muster every last shred of logic contained within my frail form and just (in the classic "argument" style of debate, nothing unfriendly) go all Vader-in-a-dark-hallway on this argument.

Ferguson makes a strong case re Rey, cant deny she is vastly overpowered in all the wrong ways as well. Ahsoka is actually less egregious.

The new Mary Sue: Qi'ra. I did a whole bunch of eyerolling reading WotBH. Vader is one of the most powerful Force users ever, and the only thing that kept him from reducing her to her component molecules was plot armor.

I’m having too much fun watching you fall on your own sword. 🤣

Can someone please explain the meaning of Mary Sue? It’s an Americanism I’m not particularly familiar with. The definition I found was a flawless boring female. Ahsoka is neither flawless (she has/had attachment issues, was impulsive, was headstrong) and clearly could never be classed as boring. As far as I can see she’s just a female Anakin (pre-fall to the DS) and the whole point of her character initially was Anakin getting a taste of his own medicine. She definitely can’t be put in the same category as Rey.

EDIT: Also, what’s the male equivalent of a Mary Sue? A Joe Bob?

Mary Sue, as I have come to understand, is a character with overwhelming powers and perks. You can call it plot armor. Even if the situation is dire, the character somehow miraculously saves the day. In a superhero movie this is a given fact, everyone knows the hero has certain superpowers.

But Rey is not the standard superhero per say, therefore she being superior to all foes and successful in more or less every scene makes her a perfect candidate of a “Mary Sue” character. Someone written to be superior, subconsciously.

Okay, thank you. So, by that definition nearly every character in cartoons is a Mary Sue, where abilities are generally exaggerated. It definitely becomes more of an issue when applied to live-action. Rey is a Mary Sue on steroids then, because despite no training and living on a desert planet all her life, she was automatically brilliant at everything. I’d say she is more Kathleen Kennedy’s poster-girl for the “girls can do no wrong” woke generation.

A female character that succeeds in everything with no justification and has no flaws.

But some people like to call every female character a Mary Sue because they lowkey hate women.

That isn’t targeted at anyone here before anyone fires up their keyboards, but if it offends you, it likely applies to you
