Wow, I had kind of wrote this off as a knock off, bottom of the barrel, money grabber, just shy of being direct-to-DVD, kind of movie.

Now you all have me thinking twice!

The animation is fantastic in this film - the hair on the arms of the vikings is amazing (and in 3D!) Lots of very cool 3D effects too. The story is heartfelt and exciting too, with some great characters.

However it doesn't have the spark of a Pixar - there isn't that seamless blend of heart and humor that makes Pixar films so enduring and endearing. But it certainly isn't a quicky film - it's much better than the last Shrek film and probably the best animated CG film that wasn't Pixar. I'd put on the same level or maybe a bit above Kungfu Panda.

I thought it was funny to see individual hairs on the Vikings hands and fingers. Very detailed.

Went to this today and loved it. The dragons are sooooo cool! I love the Father Viking. I think he would make a great 1/6 figure.
I'm really loving all the positive response for this! :)

Dragons + Vikings = Win in my book.
:rock :rock :rock

I don't think I've heard this much good stuff about a Dreamworks movie ever. But I think it's unfair to compare them to Pixar, who are the gold standard when it comes to animated films. Dreamworks can more than hold their own with them now, they just go about telling their stories differently.

I was amazed at the light on the hairs of the vikings arms, truly the best animation i have seen in awhile. And I actually went in knowing that is was not a humourous family type film, but still thought it was a good blend to keep the adult and kiddies entertained. Yay DD's seal of approval

There were quite a few humerous parts that got laughs and chuckles from the crowd.

What a fantastic film, the animation and 3D were amazing - we saw it in Real 3D and it worked wonderfully! :clap

It doesn't quite have the heart of a Disney/Pixar film, but the end scene and Hiccup's "new look" drew some ooh's and ah's from the crowd.

:drink

Did you happen to see a trailer for a movie with owls in it? I can't remember the name, but it looked amazing as well.

There's a thread here somewhere for the Guardians of Gahool (that's not what it's called, but that's the book it's based on.)

And I know it's not really fair to compare Dreamworks to Pixar, but Pixar has set the standard for CG animated films and anything else will be compared to them.

I tried about 5 different searches and couldn't find it. I guess I'll start another one. :D

Liked it to. The animation was nice and detailed. Prolly my second favorite movie of the year so far behind Shutter Island.

The owl movie looked pretty kewl too.

They are getting there though, at least with the animation; though just like Pixar all of their humans tend to take on a very similar form, and I prefer the look of Pixar's.

I took the family this weekend, and we all absolutely loved it. I would rank it up there with Kung Fu Panda as one of the very best non-Pixar CG animated films. There were some really beautifully done shots/sequences, and these "boy and his dog" stories get me every time. I think the setting and character/creature design really made this a visually appealing movie, and the 3D made some of the flight sequences all the more exciting. I'm half tempted to see it again.

Hmmm....I guess this is really good then, from what everyone is telling me here. However, I also really think that Jay dude from Tropic Thunder was missed cast. He doesnt sound like the character he plays...he sounds too old and raspy...
