Yes, Michael Jackson is an icon. Even if Thriller was the only thing he ever did, he'd be an icon. Even if the Thriller video was the only thing he ever did, he'd be an icon.

The dance moves, the music, he was definitely a cornerstone of music in the 80s. They didn't call him the King of Pop because he was a flash in the pan.

And is he really an icon, or was he ever, even if you're prepared to forgive the kiddie-fiddling? He's just an eighties star, it's not like his life and music ever resonated beyond the pop world like the Beatles, Elvis, Stones, Dylan...he didn't even encapsulate the 80's like Brando and Dean encapsulated the 50's, Madonna and Stallone did that. Although maybe he's bigger in Asia.

But a Ronald Reagan figure, I would definitely buy.

Don't feel bad, I don't entirely understand why a Michael Jackson figure, either- he's been such a nutter since the late 80's, though I think he is a bigger draw in Asia.
All I know is he never should have happened before Elvis, Dylan, Bowie, The Stones, or the Beatles (Medicom doesn't count). Hell, A Captain Fantastic Elton John, even.
And to whoever back a page or two that said if you were a fan in the 80's, you are now... um, no. I'm definitely not.
I was a fan of him beginning with the Jackson 5, (I can remember cutting a J5 promo record off the back of the Alpha Bits Cereal box when I was 5), all the way up to Thriller, and then... he just got far too weird for me to enjoy any more. I wonder what he would be like now if he had skipped the neverending spiral of vain surgeries, and overindulging himself, and not being a really "grounded" person. He is probably the single best example of a celebrity who just totally lives outside of reality.

That's a great 'what if' question. If Jackson had been as grounded as Stevie Wonder - another Motown child star - you can only begin to imagine what his reputation might be now.

thanks wookster. i'm kinda leaning towards the previous sculpt too. don't know why.

now i'm off to the LOTR 12" figures thread to talk about how fat peter jackson is and how figures from his movies should never be made because they promote obescity in children.

then i might go and take a virtual dump in the star wars 12" sandtrooper figure thread by repeatedly stating how terribly terribly naff phantom menace was, and also that star wars is not an iconic film because I, that's me, i don't think it is.

that's just the kind of blow-hard i am. and i have that kind of time.

I really can't wait for this slim TrueType to become available by itself. And whatever HT is using to gloss the eyes on their figures now, it's incredible.
