I thought it was clever! People always complain that the opening shows of anything are "boring". I don't know what people expect from an episode that has to set up the entire mythos of a show!It would be like if you loved the olympic ski jump competition but you turned it off because you found the ramp portion to be boring. Without the set up THERE IS NO JUMP!
A show can set up a mythos without stagnating in its first episode, especially with the freedom HBO can give you. The Sopranos first episode included Crissy killing a czech ganster, Tone getting into a dispute with Corrado, and blowing up a resturant. Sadly, few programs are able to pull of a great first episode that sets a solid foundation while not being overly cryptic or slow. Even comedies like Curb or Arrested development have avoided slow and methodical opening episodes and still informed us of whats going on.
I caught the show, tought it was decent but didnt really keep my interest.
