I picked up the Thor Friday. He is definitely one of the better Icons. There are a few positives and negatives though:
Positives:
Sculpt very nice- They did a good job capturing both his face and body structure.
Cloth cape- This was an inspired idea. It truly lifts the figure to the next level. In fact, I was going to skip him due to low fund
until I picked him up and saw how nice that cape looked on him.
Joints seem strong yet movable- anyone who picked up a Toybiz Spidey or Beast knows what I am talking about here. The last series was way too tight, especially in the hip joints. I broke one Spidey (thank goodness for Wal-Marts generous return policy) simply trying to get his legs to turn at the hips. Beast was hard to work with at the shoulders. Thor's joints move perfectly.
Negatives:
Hat is sculpted- Yes, I know some people would prefer this, as it would mean permanent hat head when off and probably wouldn't sit perfectly. But part of me was hoping they would try. Not a huge deal.
Paint job is still hit and miss- I went through the 3 there and found one that looked decent. However, the paint hasn't improved since Toybiz days. Now, don't get me wrong, its not horrible. But little overpaints, especially around his silver chest plates, do irritate somewhat. 20 minutes, a small paint brush, and some black paint and even I was able to fix the majority of the spots. Guess you have to take this when dealing with mass market toys.
Cape was REALLY wrinkled- this is fixable, but be prepared to iron/steam out those wrinkles. Probably due to the packaging.
Price- Price jumped from 15.88 to 19.99 for no apparent reason. Hasbro changed the packaging (its similar to the packaging on their 12" Shaak Ti and Barris Offee from the Sith line), but axed the comic book. How does this justify a 4 dollar increase? I know 4 dollars isn't much to most of us.. heck, it didn't stop me from picking him up.. but it still feels a little like Hasbro is gouging.
Related to the above topic, but the packaging isn't as nice as Toybiz. Sure, I display loose, so this area doesn't concern me. However, I know many collectors prefer MIMB. The new packaging isn't as nice as Toybiz. It also isn't collector friendly as you have to tear or cut the plastic insert away from the cardboard to remove the twist-ties. And, I REALLY miss the comic. The Toybiz comics were really nicely done... good enough to be considered an accessory.
So, over-all, I think he's a keeper. My only real advice is to wait and buy one in person so you can get a great paint job if you can be patient.
